Antifederalists • Against constitution • G. Mason and P Henry said it weakened the states, wiped out state power and individual freedom • No Bill of Rights • President or King – Pres could be elected again and again
Federalists vsAntifederalists • Federalists narrowly won debate • July 4, 1788 – ratification of constitution was celebrated • George Washington was the first President • John Adams was the first Vice President.
New Congress • Added Bill of Rights – 1st ten amendments – protects personal freedoms such as right to a speedy trial and due process • Created a system of checks and balances to prevent any one branch of government from gaining too much power. • Provided a way to change the constitution through the amendment process
