  3. What does Equality and Diversity mean to you?

Some definitions of Equality Equality is about creating a fairer society, where everyone can participate and has the opportunity to fulfil their potential (DoH, 2004) The right of different groups of people to have a similar social position and receive the same treatment (Cambridge AL Dictionary 2011) Equality in legal definition protects people from being discriminated against on the grounds of group membership, i.e. sex, religion, age (SfB 2011)

What is equality? • Equality is ensuring individuals or groups of individuals are treated fairly and equally and no less favourably, specific to their needs, including areas of race, gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation and age. • Promoting equality should remove discrimination in all of the aforementioned areas. Bullying, harassment or victimization are also considered as equality and diversity issues.

Some definitions of Diversity Diversity literally means difference Diversity describes the range of visible and non-visible differences that exist between people (Kandola and Fullerton 1998) When many different types of things or people are included in something . (Cambridge AL Dictionary 2011) • When it is used as a contrast or addition to equality, it is about recognising individual as well as group differences, treating people as individuals, and placing positive value on diversity in the community and in the workforce. (DoH 2004)

  7. What is diversity? Diversity aims to recognise, respect and value people’s differences to contribute and realise their full potential by promoting an inclusive culture for all staff and clients.

  8. The Law on Equality and Diversity The Equality Act 2010 replaced previous laws on Anti Discrimination. The Equality Act 2010 makes a persons rights not to be discriminated against stronger. The groups of people who have the right not be discriminated against have been extended. People who belong to these groups have what are called protected characteristics.

  9. The act covers nine protected characteristics, which cannot be used as a reason to treat people unfairly. Every person has one or more of the protected characteristics, so the act protects everyone against unfair treatment. The protected characteristics are: AGE DISABILITY GENDER IDENTITY OR GENDER REASSIGNMENT MARRIAGE AND CIVIL PARTNERSHIP PREGNANCY AND MATERNITY RACE RELIGION OR BELIEF SEX SEXUAL ORIENTATION The Equality Act sets out the different ways in which it is unlawful to treat someone, such as direct and indirect discrimination, harassment, victimisation and failing to make a reasonable adjustment for a disabled person.

  10. Prejudice and Discrimination – What are they ? Prejudice: an attitude – often a we/ they contrast. Often based on assumptions and emotions. An opinion, attitude or feeling about another individual or group, usually unfavourable, which is not based on accurate information and which may be upheld even when proved unjustifiable. Discrimination:behaviour – acting in a way that treats one person less favourably than another. Is this something we all do?
