  2. Why do we need internet safety? • We all have laptops with access to the internet • We can find all kinds of information about anything online. But how about information about yourself and others? • How does it make you feel to know that basically anyone in the WORLD can obtain your personal information? • Not every stranger has your best will in mind when it comes to privacy.

  3. Protection on MySpace • It is the largest online social networking portal on the web • It has 61 + million registered users • It's the second largest destination on the web, by page views • Teens have established significant presence on social networking web pages: • 61% of 13- to 17-year-olds have a personal profile on a site such as MySpace, Friendster, or Xanga. • Half have also posted pictures of themselves online. • Have a private profile? • any MySpace visitor or user can see your personal information such as where you live, how old you are, and your picture.

  4. Instant Messaging • Instant Messaging is defined by Wikipedia as a form of…communication between two or more people based on typed text. The text is conveyed via computers connected over a network such as the Internet. • From Wiki: • AIM: 53 million active, and more than100 million total users as of January 2006 • That a lot of people you can talk to! Including online predators.

  5. Chat Rooms • www.signals.co.uk/glossary/Searchgloss.aspx defines a chat room as… • Online forums where people can chat using text based communication. • This type of virtual communication is best known for teenager’s contact with predators.

The Reality of Online Chatting • A survey commissioned by Cox Communications and NCMEC2 found that of teenagers… • 71% reported receiving messages online from someone they don’t know. • 45% have been asked for personal information by someone they don’t know. • 30% have considered meeting someone that they’ve only talked to online • 14% have actually met a person face-to-face they they’ve only spoken to over the Internet (9% of 13-15s; 22% of 16-17s).

  7. Reality Cont. • The survey also stated that…. • When teens receive messages online from someone they don’t know, 40% reported that they’ll usually reply and chat with that person. • Only 18% said they’ll tell an adult.
