  1. Internet Safety By Karen Huddas Miller Elementary School Media Specialist

  2. What Is the Internet? • The internet is simply thousands of computers all connected together in one big, world-wide network. Our computers at home are linked to this network by an internet service provider – a company that allows us to dial into its own computers, usually via our telephone lines.

  3. Like the library, the internet contains information on almost any topic you can imagine in many formats, including books, articles, videos, and music recordings. • Like the newspaper, the internet can give you new information every day, including world news, business, sports, travel, entertainment, and ads.

  4. E-mail • Email is sent from computer to computer over the internet • Like the U.S. Postal service, the internet allows anyone who knows your internet address to send you a letter. (It's called electronic mail, or e-mail for short)

  5. Newsgroups • Newsgroups are online discussion groups where messages relating to specific subjects can be posted. People who sign up to the newsgroup can read the messages and post a response.

  6. Chat • Like the telephone, the internet allows you to "chat" with other people by participating in online discussion groups. • Real time chat is very popular with kids, and some web sites feature chat rooms, which are areas users can enter using a nickname and have live text conversations with each other. (Instant messaging).

  7. Getting Around Keep an eye on the kind of material your children are looking at, and make use of the tools that are available to help you choose what you do and don't want them to see.

  8. Keeping In Touch • Get to know who your children are meeting online and make sure they don't give out any personal information about themselves without your knowledge and consent. Never let them arrange to meet someone they have met on in an offline environment without you knowing.

  9. Time Spent • Limit the amount of time your children spend online, and encourage them to keep up their other activities and friendships

  10. Stay Involved • Know what your children are doing! • Learn as much as you can about the internet yourself.   11. Beneficial • Think positive – take the time to find the best and most useful sites for you and your children. • Pre-screened websites • Webquests • Internet scavenger hunts (listing websites) • Parents guide to the internet

  12. Child Safe Search Engines • Search engines are programs that you can select from your web browser to enable you to search the internet by keywords or topics. • Popular search engines http://www.safekids.com/search.htm

  13. Filtering Software • Commercial internet filtering software (consumer reports) • Child safe internet provider ex. AOL

  14. Have Fun on the Internet • Be safe!
