Take A Step Back… • An Advisory Council is a group of community business partners, parents, and teachers. • The purpose of an Advisory Council is to provide input and make suggestions on relevant educational program needs. • Councils are useful resources through academies, CTE Programs, and Technical Schools.

  3. Should You Have One? • Are adequate resources available to implement your program? • Is there community support for your program? …It’s Time You Had Resources & Support!

  4. Quantity & Quality of Advisory Councils • The Advisory Councils should be selected based upon the various interests, businesses, and communities that the educational programs serve. • Some recommendations: • Highly involved individuals who support community initiatives, key leaders in the community, and business representatives.

  5. Advisory Councils • Build Your Resources for Training Sites • Help Sponsor Costs of Running Programs • Keep Your Community & Businesses Involved!

  6. A Win-Win Partnership • Review Existing Programs • Provide Advice • Targeting Recent Trends • Student Employment & Internship Placement

  7. Meetings Must Be Effective! • After setting a time that is convenient for members, always welcome members with an agenda including intended objectives of the meeting. • Stay On Track • Assign Key Discussion Leaders • Encourage Participation • Summarize Accomplishments and Assign Tasks • Start & End On Time

  8. Involve Your Community • If you have buy-in of the business & community leaders, they will support you! • The advisory council not only functions by giving advice & making recommendations, they can share their resources to your advantage!

  9. 3-4 Times Annually • Councils need to meet based on the needs of the program. • If meetings are conducted orderly & structured, they should only require 3-4 meetings a year!

  10. Keys to Success • #1 Leadership: respect and partnership • #2 Involved Faculty: have them included • #3 Committed Members: diversity! • #4 Meaningful Work: Clear Expectations! • #5 Enjoyable Meetings: share ideas & needs

  11. Questions To Ask Yourself • 1. What is my Area of Focus? • 2. What title would be a good focus for the advisory council? • 3. Which business partners, community leaders, faculty would be important to include on this council? • 4. What are the objectives of this council?
