The Sporting Pyramid • The different levels of sport can be represented in a pyramid. • This concept is used often to develop a continuum from foundation to elite level. • The broader the base of the pyramid the greater the elite pool from which selection can take place. • A link exists from base to elite level as success creates role models who inspire others and provide motivation to progress up the pyramid.

  4. FOUNDATION : grass roots level. Associated with introducing young children to sport and encouraging them to learn motor skills. The UK has schemes such as TOP sport and Dragon Sport to facilitate this. • PARTICIPATION : sport undertaken mainly for fun and enjoyment. Skill level will vary as some highly competent sportspeople participate for these reasons.

  5. The Sporting Pyramid • COMPETITION: performance level. A more structured form of competitive sport at club or county level. • ELITE: performers at the highest national and international standard.

  6. The Sporting Pyramid • The higher one moves up the pyramid the higher their skill level, training needs, support needs. • Q : For each level list what personnel an individual would need for their sport.

UK Agencies and the organisation and development of sport. • Sports organisation and development in the UK has not followed a regular pattern and the government has never involved itself directly. • There are 3 key agencies 1. UK Sport 2. Sport England / Scotland / Wales / Northern Ireland 3. Youth Sport Trust

  8. UK SPORT • Responsible for the management of elite sport in the UK. • Mission: to lead sport in UK to world class success. • Goals: 1. To support and help deliver success at Olympic and Paralympic level. Has a no compromise approach. Targets resources and activities in which athletes can win medals. 2. World class performance programme funds UK athletes. Money comes from National Lottery.

Sport England • This is a government agency responsible for investing in and promoting community sport in order to create an active nation. • AIM: to get 2 million active by 2012. • The Lottery Sports Fund assists through local schemes. • Latest strategy is Promoting Sport Tool Kit which is a collection of simple to use tools to help clubs, county sports partnerships and local authorities promote sport and recreation • There are parallel agencies in each of the home counties.

Youth Sport Trust • This is responsible for all sport and activity that involves young people in and out of school. • Their central role is in supporting the department for children, schools and families and the department for culture, media and sport in the delivery of national sporting strategies to promote PE and school sport.
