How the French Increased Tension • Napoleon III and the lenders and speculator’s method ends…. • Planting of only lucrative crops • Concentrating Industries in European areas • For Muslims citizenship meant apostasy for them • Muslims, who made up almost 90% of the population but produced 20% of Algeria's income, paid 70% of direct taxes and 45% of the total taxes collected. • Better medical treatment and the population problem

Abd al Qadir • He became Amir al-Muminin (commander of the faithful) • Set up a territorial Muslim state based on the communities of the interior with Tlemcen as capital By 1839, he controlled more than two-thirds of Algeria. • Government collected taxes, supported education, undertook public works, and established agricultural and manufacturing cooperatives to stimulate economic activity. • Fought against French troops though ultimately lost to General Thomas Bugeaud.
