Adolescence and Puberty • Adolescence = the stage of development during which humans grow from childhood to adulthood • Girls – average girls grow 12 inches and gain about 40 pounds between ages 11-16, reaching her full adult height by age 16 or 17. Other physical changes are acne or pimples, body hair grows, breasts develop, hips widen and menstruation begins. • Boys – grow 16 inches and gain about 60 pounds between ages 12-18, reaching his full adult height by age 18 or 19. Other physical changes are acne or pimples, facial hair grows, voice deepens, shoulders broaden and body hair grows.
Hormones • Hormones are chemicals that are made in one part of your body which cause a change in a different part of the body • Human Growth Hormone is made by the Pituitary Gland in your brain and it causes your bones and muscles to grow. • Thyroxine is made by the Thyroid Gland and controls how your body makes and uses energy. • Epinephrine makes your heart beat faster and prepares your body to fight or flee when you are frightened or excited • Hormones are part of the Endocrine Body System
Puberty • Puberty is the stage of development when the reproductive system becomes mature… Usually between age 9-16 in girls and 13-15 in boys. This is when your body makes more sex hormones. • Testosterone is made in the testis and controls much of the growth and function of the male body… makes sperm • Estrogen is made in the ovaries and controls much of the growth and function of the female body… releases eggs • Greater amounts of sex hormones and growth hormones lead to growth spurts

Mental, Emotional and Social Changes • Learning to communicate with your parents is very important if you want to gain more independence. • Feeling happy one day and sad the next day is called mood swings. It is perfectly normal. • Trying to fit in with friends may tempt you to do un-healthy or un-safe things. There are better ways to be accepted!
