What to think about…. • What is the function of the respiratory system? • What are the parts of the respiratory system? • What are the functions of the different parts of the respiratory system?
What are the 3 things most necessary for life? (in order) Oxygen Water Food
How do our bodies get fuel? Eat Food • Where is this fuel burned for energy? Cells engines Cells are the of the human body.
Burning fuel in the human body requires oxygen • Cells produce waste products like CO 2 What would happen if CO2 was allowed to build up inside of our bodies? poison us
What does respiration do? • It obtains the oxygen our bodies need and gets rid of the carbon dioxide so that it does not build up in our bodies and poison us.
What things require respiration? all living things • Respiration is what is required in order for living things to produce energy
Why can’t human cells get oxygen the way an amoeba does? • Because most of human cells are not in direct contact with the outside environment. O2 has to be brought to the cells and CO2 taken away.
What do we call all the parts of the body that work together to accomplish this goal? What are some of the main parts of the respiratory system? Respiratory System Trachea nose Lungs Bronchi Mouth
Parts of the Respiratory System The entrance that moistens and warms air as it enters the body. nose Inside the nose is that clean the air. cilia & mucous
the chamber behind the nose and mouth that leads to the esophagus and trachea. Pharynx
carries air to the lungs and is protected by a flap of tissue called the epiglottis. Trachea
Also called the voice box, it has 2 folds of tissue that vibrate to make sound. Larynx
The trachea divides into 2 main tubes of the lungs called the bronchial tubes or bronchi. Bronchi
are the air sacs located at the end of the tubes in the lungs that look like grapes. Alveoli What surrounds the alveoli? capillaries
What takes place between the capillaries and the alveoli? • The red blood cells in the capillaries exchange their CO2 for the O2 in the alveoli.
What is the muscle responsible for breathing? Diaphragm • When you are breathing in the diaphragm is getting smaller by contracting When you breathe out the diaphragm is relaxing
