Distinguishing FORCE and ENERGY What do you already know, or want to know about forces and energy?
FORCE • Is the go-between in any transfer of energy from one moving object to another. • Think of it as simply a pull or a push
FORCE • The force does not come free! • A source of energy produces the force • Example: the potential energy in food, through our metabolism, is behind muscular force.
THE FOUR FORCES OF THE UNIVERSE • Gravity • Electromagnetic Force • Strong Force • Weak Force
Gravity • The attractive force between all masses • Has infinite range
Electromagnetic Force • The attraction between negative and positive charges. • Has infinite range • Examples: magnetic attraction, electricity, static electricity, protons and electrons…
Strong Force • The “short range” force that holds protons together in a nucleus • Only “exists” in the atomic nucleus itself
Weak Force • Causes Beta decay and is short range like the strong force
Questions to Consider • Although we know gravity exists, we don’t really know “why” it exists. • What causes gravity to exist? This remains a mystery, but scientists have many interesting theories. • Why is matter separated into positively and negatively charged particles? This also remains a mystery.
