Nuclear Engineering Nuclear engineers research and develop the processes, instruments and systems needed to derive benefits from nuclear energy and radiation. They can work in power plants and different types of labs. This field can include the study of medical and other things such as… • Operate nuclear power plants • Work with the disposal of nuclear waste • Develop nuclear power sources for spacecraft • Use radioactive materials for industrial and medical uses, such as equipment to diagnose and treat medical problems
Different Sub-Fields The different sub-fields of nuclear engineering include… • Nuclear medicine and medical physics • Nuclear material and nuclear fuels • Radiation measurements and dosimetry
Nuclear medicine and medical physics Nuclear medicine is a branch of medicine that uses radionuclide’s and relies on the process of radioactive decay in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Nuclear medicine has to do with using radioactive material to heal patients. This method is used for different types of disease, such as, cancer, brain tumors, glioblastoma (a type of brain tumor that has no known cure), and many more.
BNCT( Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) • BNCT is a very unique way to treat cancer patients. • The way this technique heals cancer patients is by using the element boron. When the element comes in contact with the tumor it starts to kill it. • This procedure has helped heal 50-60 thousand patients suffering from cancer every year.
