Heat Of The Earth • Approximately 99% of the earth is >1000C (1800F) • Approximately 99.9% of the earth is > 100C (212F) the boiling point of water • Information from the German Energy Agency
Expected US Temperatures at 6kMDOE & Dr. Dave Blackwell, SMU

From: “how Hot Is It” , Ken W. Wisian et al, GRC trans. V20,September/Oct 1996
The Earth is Renewable Energy • Well temp gradients are range up to 60C/km! • Natural occurring K40 (potassium) is richer in some formations than others • NM has both uranium and potassium (potash) From: “how Hot Is It” , Ken W. Wisian et al, GRC trans. V20,September/Oct 1996
EGS: Enhance Geothermal Resources • For New Mexico, EGS could mean: • Converting deep oil and gas wells to geothermal power production • Small binary power plants • Heat harvesting of hot co-produced fluids • Creating man made geothermal reservoirs • Hot dry rock projects • Potentially large power plants • Working fluids not limited to water but could be CO2 or other fluids
EGR: Engineered Geothermal Reservoir Well is drilled to desired temperature and rock type. Hydraulic pressure is used to fracture the rock.
Enclosed Geothermal System The fractured rock is used as an heat exchanger. This is the standard concept shown in EGS presentations.
A More Realistic View Horizontal wells can reach up to 6 miles in length!! Horizontal wells in the hot formations can greatly increase the size of the reservoir.
Shameless Ad First geothermal tool – designed at Sandia built New Mexico business.
Conclusion • New Mexico has significant geothermal potential for EGS • Small power binary power plants • Large EGR power plants • Questions for the group • Has anyone looked at the potential heat generated in NM rock formations? • Has anyone considered using other fluids other than water for a hot dry rock heat exchanger for New Mexico EGS?
