Mr Anthony Doyle Pathways Coordinator Pathways, Careers, Tertiary Information
Students leaving school need generic employment skills understanding of the work environment career options and pathways positive attitudes towards vocational education and training
The word “tertiary” reflects any training and education that happens in the senior school years and/or beyond school. What is Tertiary Education ?
University TAFE Institute Private Provider Traineeship and Apprenticeship Further education equips you for work and life beyond school Tertiary Education can be provided by a:
Certificate 4 and Diploma/Advanced Diploma Generally require Cert 3 or Stage 2 SACE completion Certificate 1, 2 & 3 Admission requirements depend on competitiveness of course Check TAFE website carefully for courses of interest Some courses also have special requirementse.g. interviews, auditions, aptitude tests, portfolios TAFE
Traineeships & Apprenticeships • Generally prefer completion of Stage 1 SACE • Have basic literacy, numeracy and mechanical reasoning assessments • Previous work experience or part-time work is considered • Some students commence ASBA’s (Australian School-Based Apprenticeship) with Stage 1 or 2 studies
For some VET courses, a day per week out of school is required • Students must catch-up work missed • Will usually involve missing at least one, possibly two, double lessons for subjects on the VET day
ATAR • Australian Tertiary Admission Rank • Formerly called TER • National name used in every state ie. replaces HSC, VCE etc • But states still calculate their ATAR in different ways
To be able to “get into” a course at university you should: complete SACE obtain a Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR, previously called TER) above the “cut off” for that year gain 80 Stage 2 credits + pass RP Complete any Year 12 prerequisites for the course University Entrance
60 credits from subjects (excl Community Studies) Plus 20 credits from one of following a fourth subject (not Community Studies) 10 credits from Research Project B with half score from 4th subject 10 credits from Research Project B & 10 credits from a 5th subject (eg.1 Music unit) 10 credits (half score) from 4th subject and 10 credits (half score) from extra subject Uni Entrance – the ATAR
67% of ATARs were calculated using students Research Project result ie. doing the RP improved their score to give them their best score, better than their score from their 4 20-credit subjects.
VET counts towards completing SACE • Choosing Workplace Practices subject is recommended with VET • VET can count towards your ATAR if a fullCert 3 course is completed
Using a Cert 3 to get an ATAR is not our recommended pathway • Incomplete courses will mean an ATAR is NOT achieved • TAFE require all competencies to be demonstrated and passed or the course is considered incomplete
SATAC Guide SATAC guide explains • ATAR calculation • Example subject selections • Prerequisite subjects • Precluded combinations • Counting restrictions • Bonus Points Schemes READ CAREFULLY
Step 1: Consider your Tertiary options for 2014 – do your research Step 2: Determine possible Stage 2 course to meet Tertiary requirements and/or open up the pathway to your career Step 3: Check you completed required (prerequisite) Year 11 subjects Best approach to planning
