The divisionon Glaciers and Icesheets Co-ordination of scientific research, organisation of scientific meetings, and promotion of the exchange of information and data in the field of ice sheet and glacier research. Glaciological field and satellite measurements of glacier fluctuations and mass change are systematically collected and archived by the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS), National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and Global Land Ice Measurement from Space (GLIMS) project. These efforts are coordinated via the overarching Global Terrestrial Network for Glaciers (GTN-G) which is advised by a Standing Group chaired (ex-officio) by the head of this IACS Division.
The Global Terrestrial Network for Glaciers (GTN‐G)Steering Committee is established to coordinate, support, and advise the WGMS, the NSIDC, and the GLIMS initiative concerning the monitoring of glaciers and ice caps. GTN-G Executive Board and GTN-G Advisory Board GTN-G Executive Board isresponsible for • the development and implementation of the international observation strategy for glaciers and ice caps, • providing standards for the monitoring of glacier fluctuations (e.g., length change, mass balance) and for inventories, • the compilation and distribution of such information in a standardized form 1 Representative of the WGMS , M. The Global Terrestrial Network for Glaciers (GTN‐G) Steering Committee GTN-G Advisory Boardis to • support • consult • periodically evaluate the work of the Executive Board and its three operational bodies concerning the monitoring of glaciers and ice caps. The GTN-G Advisory Board periodically (8 years) evaluates the work of the GTN‐G Executive Board and its three operational bodies The process that consists of • a self‐evaluation report of the GTN‐G Executive Board, • a site‐visit at one of the body’s location, • and a final evaluation report from the GTN‐G Advisory Board. The final evaluation report shall be written under the lead of the Chair of the Advisory Board in the third quarter of 2014 and comprise the following chapters: • Executive summary • Self-evaluation report • Evaluation of the WGMS • Evaluation of the U.S. NSIDC • Evaluation of the GLIMS initiative • Evaluation of the overall GTN-G framework • Summary and recommendations
