Scope of the review • understand better the current support that executive councillors at the LGA Group receive from their respective LGA Group organisations • identify where this support can be improved (recognising this is within existing budget constraints) • highlight, promote and cascade good practice • put in a place of series of recommendations for the LGPB to consider • present report with key recommendations to the LGA Executive
Review of the support to LGA Group Councillors • The review included discussions with colleagues/councillors across the LGA Group • A survey of all LGA Group councillors (38% response) • Starting from a very good base, good practice but not across whole Group • Deliver the recommendations in existing Group cash limits
Key actions • *Role profile (job description) • *Induction – Group wide • Person specification (Eyes wide open) • Higher quality of support and consultation for Board reports • High quality preparation and briefings:- -Ministerial meetings, -Select Committees, -media (already good practice) -speaking engagements
Key actions (cont) • Maximise exposure and visibility of our politicians and work programmes. • Developing mentoring and shadowing arrangements • Review of outside bodies and SIG reporting
Key report recommendation (14) A Task group be set up to explore the logistics and outline the content for a LGA Group councillor development programme and officer development programme
Key Recommendations for the Executive • Agree to the report recommendations • A Task group be set up to both prioritise the recommendations and consider next steps in the development of support to LGA Group councillors • Nominate a Chair and member from each of the political groups
