  1. Performance classification framework for SA bitumen Report on progress

  2. Specification framework • Current system provides for production grades • Selection of grade – largely empirical • Globally selection of binder based on: • Climate • Traffic volumes • Loading rate • Past 15 years – significant developments in specifying binder properties

  3. Scope of bit spec working group • Primarily to examine the feasibility of the implementation of a performance grading system • The need to differentiate between asphalt and seals • Inclusion of modified binders too ambitious • Predominantly review of current experience and literature studies • New test procedures – only if appropriate • Time frame for implementation 3 – 5 years

  4. Rules of the game • No proliferation of binder grades (in terms of the scale of SA industry) • CAPSA paper of vd Ven et al provides the basis of a framework • Finger printing of current SA bitumen using • SHRP procedures • Methods developed at UW-M • Develop a longer term ageing protocol for SA bitumen

  5. Way ahead • Full range of binders from all SA refineries tested under SHRP and UW-M methods • Analysis of test results and recommendations will be reported to the RPF task group • Validation of “representivity” through further tests • Implementation
