Thank you! • PHENIX is the best collaboration that I’ve been in! Thank you for trusting me to represent you • I am thrilled/awed + a bit scared • will do my absolute best to carry out the responsibility • Represent PHENIX to BNL & funding agencies • physics and broader community as called for • this is, of course, a job we ALL do! • advocacy for PHENIX physics, visibility, collaborators • keep the balance among institutions, countries collaborating institutions, physics thrusts It is an honor to serve PHENIX as spokesperson
plenty of help will be needed • Goal #1: continue the business of producing the best physics at RHIC! • As decisions need to be made, I will work with: • PM, EC, collaborators! • Goal #2: Don’t fix it if ain’t broke! • but there are new challenges we face • counting on advice from Bill… • Please tell me what’s important! • or tell one of the deputy spokespersons
Deputy spokespersons • Richard Seto has agreed • to serve as deputy spokesperson • for PHENIX • MANY THANKS to Rich! • Also plan to name ~ 2 other deputy spokespersons • pending consultation with EC this evening
Run 7 taken from New York Times on Tuesday Democrats Decline to Take Up Unfinished Spending Bills By CARL HULSE Published: December 12, 2006 WASHINGTON, Dec. 11 — Congressional Democrats said Monday that they would not try to finish multiple spending bills left hanging by the departed Republican majority. Instead, they want to keep most government agencies operating under their current budgets until next fall.
this may not be as bad as it sounds • Unclear to what extent the Office of Science is locked into last year’s apportionment of funds • total is fixed • ’07 budget had similar total to ’06 with different split • Currently dealing with uncertainty • consequently the announced delay of run start • What we can do • articulate WHY its important to have a run 7 • talk to your elected representatives
Run 7 is crucial* • New ion data prior to the next Quark Matter meeting • RHIC has dominated QM since 2001 • need to keep that dynamic! • International collaborators (and new grad students in the U.S. too…) must see dedication to running RHIC • Long shutdown without advance warning squanders opportunity to plan & carry out larger scope maintenance • Even a “short” Au+Au run will produce new physics • HBD, RxNP, TOF-W + AGEL, MPC first look • Spin commissioning is critical * to BNL & DOE as well as PHENIX
