  2. Preparation • Plan your presentation carefully. Think about the different stages in preparing your presentation • Consider: • Objectives • Audience • Content (be selective)

  3. Organisation • A clear and coherent structure • introduction • main body • conclusion • Tell your audience what you are going to talk about, talk about it, and then tell your audience what you have talked about

  4. Visual aids • PowerPoint • Use key words • Make sure your slides are clear • Do not write everything you are going to say • Do not overuse animation • Use charts, diagrams, pictures etc • Visuals must be relevant and should not distract from your main ideas.

  5. Practise • Practise, Practise, Practise! • As many times as you can. • Time it to make sure it is not too long or too short. • Get other people to listen and give you feedback.

  6. Questions • Prepare for questions. • Try to think of the kinds of questions your audience might ask and prepare answers to them. • Do not panic if you can’t understand a question – ask for it to be repeated or rephrase it yourself

  7. Delivery • Nerves – you will be nervous (most people are) but try not to speak too fast. • Audience engagement –make your audience interested by engaging with them. Be enthusiastic, look around at your audience, and make eye contact. • Body language – stand do not sit; be positive in your body language do not just stand still. However, do not use too much body language and be careful of negative hand signals or mannerisms. • Voice – speak slowly, clearly and audibly. Vary your intonation. • Audience reactions – deal with questions politely; repeat or rephrase the question to make sure you have understood it and that the rest of the audience has heard it.

  8. Language • Simplicity – use short words and sentences you are comfortable with. • Clarity – do not use lots of jargon or other technical terms. • Signposting – indicate when you have finished one section and are moving on to another. Give the audience clear signals or signposts as you go along. • Accuracy – check your English is correct. You will need to check grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
