  2. Before We Start • My Name is Mr. O’Byrne • This is Algebra • The first four minutes must be silent

  3. Now Back to the Do Now a. 5 degrees above 0 b. A $100 withdrawal from the bank c. Loss of 15 yds d. 5 feet below sea level

  4. Imagine You are on an elevator at the ground floor and then hit the 15 button. At the 15th floor, you realize you made a mistake and go back down 12 floors. Where did you end up?

  5. Ok So Today • AIM: How do we add signed numbers • HW: Complete HW #1 worksheet

  6. Homework Set up • Mild • Medium • Spicy

  7. Homework Expectations • This will be completed and turned in tomorrow • It will be graded • See me if you have questions

  8. Notes Simplify: 1) 4 + 3 = 2) (-2)+(-8) = 3) 5+(-6) = 3) -6 + 8 =

  9. From the Examples: Can we come up with a rule? Rules for adding signed numbers: • If the numbers are the same, add the #’s and the keep the sign • If the numbers are different, subtract the numbers and keep the sign of the number with the greatest absolute value

  10. Try these on your own 1. 12+(-10) 2. (-4)+(-8) 3. (-13)+3 4. -20+(-12) 5. (-8)+(-7)+3+(-5) 6. 4+(-2)+7+(-10)

  11. Now look at this • 5 + (-3) = • 5 – 3 = • NOTE: subtracting is the same as adding the opposite

  12. Rules for subtracting signed numbers 1. Keep, change, opposite 2. Follow the rules for addition 3. Work two at a time

  13. Notes 1) 2)

  14. Independent Practice • 8-(-2) • 8-3 • -8-(-4) • -41- (-30) • 10+(-7)-(-4) • -3+(-2)-(-5)+(-3)+11

  15. Closing • What was the AIM • How do we add signed numbers? • How do we subtract signed numbers?
