The Civil War Recap • This culminating war took place because of a disagreement over slavery and state’s rights between the North and the South • From 1861 – 1865, our nation was engaged in a bloody war. Brother against brother we fought. • The 13th Amendment was signed which made slavery illegal. • President Lincoln was assassinatedas the war was coming to an end. • The war ended and slaves were set free. • The country desperately needed to rebuild and reunite.
Reconstruction Recap • How do we reunite two regions who disagree with one another? • This was the biggest question between 1865 – 1877. • The United States was able to reunite and rebuild through many hardships and disagreements. • We were able to reconstruct our nation together again. • However, we face a bigger issue, where does the United States go from here?
Expansion • This is where we pick up! • We will learn in this lesson as well as the lesson to follow that the United States continued to expand and grow.
Why Expansion? • Unfortunately, Reconstruction left many people in the United States very poor. • These poor people looked for a new start and work anywhere. • Work was found out west and land was very cheap. • We will learn that expansion is the result of people making big changes!
What’s the Good News? • A lot of technological advances occurred such as the development of railroads and even little things like barbed wire made huge differences. • America was able to feed itself for the first time.
What’s the Bad News? • Relationships with Native Americans were terrible and it resulted in many fights. • Animals like buffalo were nearly wiped out.
Why Do We Need to Know This? • As we discover what happened out west during the expansion period we will see that many of the events that took place directly relate to how we live our lives today! • Ever wonder where you get your bread from? • Where on earth did cowboys come from? • Maybe you want to know about a crazy guy named Judah? • We will learn about all of these things!
