  1. Chapter 4Fractions, Decimals, and Percent.

  2. Day 1

  3. Vocabulary a representation of a real number using the base ten and decimal notation. Decimal- Deposit- an amount added to an account or place. an amount subtracted from the original price. Discount- a number that represents part of a whole or part of a set. Fraction - Number Line - a line on which numbers are marked at intervals, used to illustrate simple numerical operations. a ratio that compares a number to 100. Percent - Proportion - an equation that shows two ratios are equivalent. Ratio- a comparison of two or more numbers. Rational Number - any number that can be written as a fraction. Taxes- an amount of money added to a total bill. Tips- an amount of money given to a service provided as gratitude.

  4. I Can…. Convert fractions, decimals, and percent using the standard algorithm.

  5. Converting Numbers Essential Understanding: • To convert a fraction to a decimal Simply divide the numerator by the denominator. Your answer will be a decimal. Thus, you will need to add a decimal and zeros to your dividend. Example: • To convert a decimal to a percent Multiply the decimal by 100. Using your knowledge of the powers of ten, you can do this mentally by moving the decimal two place to the right. Example: • To convert a percent to a decimal Divide the percent by 100. Using your knowledge of powers of ten, you can do this mentally by moving the decimal two places to the left. Example: • To convert a decimal to a fraction You simply write it like you read it. Example:

  8. Day 2

  9. Bell Work Darion is saving up his allowance to buy a new video game system. The game system, he wants, cost $244.36. His dad offers to pay 25% of the price, if he gets all As. How much money has his dad offered to pay? Hint- Try thinking of the percent as a fraction in simplest form.

  11. Vocabulary a representation of a real number using the base ten and decimal notation. Decimal- Deposit- an amount added to an account or place. an amount subtracted from the original price. Discount- a number that represents part of a whole or part of a set. Percent - Proportion - an equation that shows two ratios are equivalent. Ratio- a comparison of two or more numbers. Rational Number - any number that can be written as a fraction. Taxes- an amount of money added to a total bill. Tips- an amount of money given to a service provided as gratitude.

  12. I Can…. Calculate percent of a number using multiplication.

  13. Finding the Percent of a Number Essential Understanding: • You can use multiplication to find the percent of a number. • This can be done by changing the percent to a decimal or a fraction, as they both represent the same ratio of part to whole. • To find the percent of a number using decimals Example: • To find the percent of a number using fractions. Example:

  16. Day 3

  17. Bell Work Solve the following equation in two different ways. A recent survey shows that 65% of students like school lunch. If there are 800 students in the school, how many like school lunch?

  19. Vocabulary a representation of a real number using the base ten and decimal notation. Decimal- Deposit- an amount added to an account or place. an amount subtracted from the original price. Discount- a number that represents part of a whole or part of a set. Taxes- an amount of money added to a total bill. Tips- an amount of money given to a service provided as gratitude.

  20. I Can…. Calculate percent of a number using proportional reasoning.

  21. Percent of a Number Essential Understanding: • You can calculate the percent of a number using proportional reasoning. As, a percent is a ratio per 100. Think converting numbers from percent to decimal to fraction. Example: • You can use this knowledge to create equivalent proportions. Example: • You can calculate the part in two ways Scaling- Example Cross Product/ One step Equations- Example:

  22. Exit Ticket Use proportional reasoning to solve. 20% of 300 = 75% of 144 =

  24. Day 4

  25. Bell Work Use proportional reasoning to solve. Sarah tells the student council the have raised 80% 0f the funds the need for the up coming dance. If they have already raised $164.00, how much do they need for the dance?

  27. Vocabulary a representation of a real number using the base ten and decimal notation. Decimal- Deposit- an amount added to an account or place. an amount subtracted from the original price. Discount- a number that represents part of a whole or part of a set. 28. I Can…. Calculate percent less than 1% and greater than 100%.

  29. Percentages less than and greater than Essential Understandings: • Occasionally, you will have percentages that are less than 1% or greater than 100% • Percentages less than 1% represent a very small fraction Example: • Percentages greater than 100% represent a mixed number. Meaning you have more than 1 whole piece or set. Example:

  30. pOp Quiz • Take out a pencil and a calculator • Clear everything else from your desk

  31. Exit Ticket Create a rule for solving the following equation. 15 is 20% of what number?
