Contents • Uncertain population growth • Population diversification will continue • Changes in how we live together • Narrowing differences between inner and outer London • New forms of inequality and unfairness • New evidence on externalities can help us address social challenges • Digital culture hasn’t eradicated loneliness and exclusion • We haven’t yet learned how to manage social media and mental health • There is more work to do to address civic participation • Reduced Borough spending on services impacts other sectors #BigNetworkDay
1. The era of certain population growth is coming to an end • After 25 years of population growth, rate of annual change has fallen back to levels seen in the late 90s, mid-2000s • Implications for investment / regeneration #BigNetworkDay
2. London's population will continue to diversify • Continued growth in diversity by ethnicity • Growth of very old and young age groups • Importance of inter-generational policies – housing, wealth, communities #BigNetworkDay White BAME Asian Black Other
3. Housing costs are changing how we live together • Average household size increasing • Yet population growth will increase both the number of single person households, but also different types of large households • Increase in private renting, especially for families • Implications for loneliness / overcrowding / insecurity and quality of housing #BigNetworkDay
4. Traditional differences between inner and outer London are narrowing • Impact of increased housing costs, welfare reform in inner London • Narrowing poverty gap between inner and outer London • Outer London becoming • More ethnically diverse • More larger families #BigNetworkDay
5. There are new forms of inequality and unfairness • Half of families in poverty have someone in full or part-time work • Increase in insecure employment (1/10 workers) #BigNetworkDay
6. New evidence on externalities can help us address social challenges #BigNetworkDay
7. Digital culture hasn’t eradicated loneliness and exclusion Frequency of loneliness by age group #BigNetworkDay
8. We haven’t yet learned how to manage social media and mental health Source: Millenium Cohort Survey #BigNetworkDay
9. There is more work to do to address civic participation • Fall in voter registration • Volunteering rates are fairly steady Source: Time Well Spent report, NCVO #BigNetworkDay
10. Reduced Borough spending on services impacts on other sectors • Expenditure on children’s services fell by 26% between 2010/11 and 2017/18 • Smaller reduction for statutory services (looked after children, safeguarding) than universal services • Large fall in Borough spending on the voluntary sector (-69% in real terms) #BigNetworkDay
360Giving Open data for more effective grantmaking @360Giving #BigNetworkDay
What we want Our vision is that UK grantmaking is more informed, effective and strategic. #BigNetworkDay
What we do • Founded by a philanthropist who asked “How can I do as much as possible with my money?” • Wanted to know who was funding what, where & when • Support funders to publish their grants data openly and to use the data as part of a more informed approach to decision-making and learning. #BigNetworkDay
Supporting collaboration “It’s not about transparency at all. It’s self interest...I want to know what people are doing so I can learn from them, I can collaborate with them and I can get better at my job. It’s about making informed choices. Philanthropy can feel a bit like giving in the dark and I just want us to have better information so we can make the best decisions.” Fran Perrin, founder of the Indigo Trust and 360Giving Giving Thought podcast, July 2018 #BigNetworkDay
