WASHINGTOND.C. TRIP Grade 8 Parent Informational Meeting
General Information • Trip Dates – Tuesday, June 6th-Friday, June 9th(4 days, 3 nights) • 42nd consecutive year trip has been run at JGMS • Tour Company: World Strides (Annapolis, MD/Charlottesville,VA) 1-800-468-5899 • Chaperones (years on trip) : Joe Casey (22), Sara Berinato (8), Marcy Beinert (1), Constantine Georgopoulos (7),John Glynn (8), Allison Hammer (13),Vanessa Mangini (6), Joyce Marchesini (8) (Parent Nurse), Jim Nagle (9), Jen Naylor (4), Jeff Wardwell (13) (BPD). • We expect 150 students to participate • School Committee Approved (5/16)
Chaperone Information • All students will be assigned a chaperone for the duration of the trip. • Students will be required to continuously check in with this chaperone. • As a general rule, the group travels together with the entire chaperone team. • Students are given a reasonable amount of freedom within museums, monuments, etc., but are given strict parameters in which to explore. • Students are required to wear a waterproof emergency wristband, which has an emergency phone number to call in case they’re separated from the group. • Students may carry cell phones to use in an emergency, and for taking pictures. (No texting!)
Trip Cost • The total cost of the trip is $779 which includes transportation, accommodations, all meals, a group photo, and medical care. • Our initial “kickoff” meetings were held in all social studies classes last May. • Final payments are past due.(On-Line Acct.# 77811) • Scholarship money was available to those students who qualified. (No student is denied participation because of finances.)
Itinerary • This is our (almost) final trip schedule. We reserve the right to tweak this schedule while on tour to best meet the group’s needs. • The trip is well organized and we keep the kids very busy!
Transportation • Carrier: Yankee Line, Boston, MA (1-800-942-8890) • We will be chartering four coach buses for the duration of the trip. • Coaches are equipped with bathrooms, DVD’s and TVs. • Each bus has a capacity of 50 passengers; (students will be riding the same bus for the entire trip) • There is no overnight bus travel and drivers faithfully follow maximum driving time restrictions.

Hotel Information • All hotel rooms are equipped with two queen/king size beds. The usual amenities are provided with the exception of pay movie channels, and long distance phone service. Wi-Fi will be shut off. • The hotel does have a pool but students will not be allowed to use it. We will be traveling to the Lee Recreation Center on Wednesday night. Students will have access to a pool during that evening (teacher chaperoned). It is important to pack bathing suits that are school appropriate.
Hotel Information cont. • Males and females will be placed on separate floors or separate wings. • Chaperone rooms are located amongst the student rooms. • Students of the opposite sex will not be allowed in each other’s rooms at anytime. Any socializing can be done in general meeting areas. • Curfew is generally at 10:00 PM and is strictly enforced. Failure to comply with this simple rule will result in the student being sent home at the parents’ expense. (tape) • Night time security is hired to monitor our floors between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
Roommate Selection • All students are required to room in groups of four or five. There will be a few rooms of three. (Our cost is based on this.) • In mid-March, students received a selection sheet in which they were to list their preference for roommates. Although the list is complete, there are still some modifications that we need to make. Inevitably there is a lot of anxiety surrounding this rooming process. Please discuss with your child the importance of being flexible and welcoming others into their groups.
Meals • All meals are provided as part of the trip cost. • Students will be eating at a combination of food courts, hotel buffets, and one sit down dinner. • Cash or meal tickets will be used at most sites. • Breakfast is served buffet style at our hotel Wed-Fri morning. Students are responsible for their own breakfast Tuesday morning.

Medical • Joyce Marchesini will again be accompanying us on our trip to take care of any medical needs that may arise. • The nurse will administer all medication. We will be asking all parents to provide an extensive medical history and emergency contact information.(Mr. Casey, Mrs. Eaton, and Mrs. Marchesini will all be coordinating these efforts.)
Participation Guidelines • This is a school-sponsored trip. All rules and regulations outlined in our school handbook are in effect for the duration of the trip. • The school dress code will be strictly enforced. • Any students who have experienced disciplinary problems during the school year may be prohibited from attending the trip. The final decision rests with school administration. • Teacher chaperones are volunteering their own time to accompany the students. All student behavior is expected to be respectful and cooperative. Failure to cooperate may result in a student being sent home at parents’ expense. • Cell phones will be allowed on the bus/hotel rooms and for taking pictures while we are at different sites during the day. Any abuses of this rule will result in the cell phone being taken away from the student. ( Parents, please do not call/text during the day! There will be adequate time in the morning and at night to speak with your child. )
What Next? • Roommate issues will be cleared up over the next week or so. • Bus assignments will be completed. • Please return medical forms, behavior contract, and trip waiver forms ASAP. (Everybody needs to turn in Forms A&B. Students taking prescription medication also need to turn in Forms C&D) • An assembly the week before the trip will be held with all students. Final information will be distributed ( bus lists, final itinerary, etc.) for both students and parents.(All of this material will also be posted on our school web site.) • Students will be preparing for the trip in their social studies classes prior to departure. • As always, any concerns can be addressed to Mr. Casey
