About 80 percent of the patients in clinics and hospitals treated for fractures are not evaluated for osteoporosis or further injury that might result future fractures, orthopedic experts say, citing a new report by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). Osteoporosis is a global epidemic against which drug manufacturers like Merck are competing fiercely to produce a viably profitable treatment, especially alternatives that will be the new Fosamax.
According to the IOF surveys, over half of all individuals documented to have suffered from hip fractures were found to have a history of previous fractures. There is an implication that health care professionals are simply treating the injuries of patients without trying to find out the underlying causes through proper diagnosis. If these findings are not managed properly, it might lead to the greater risk of future fractures, suffering, long-term disability, disfigurement and possibly even early death for patients.
Medical experts from around the world have concluded that fractures are socioeconomic burdens that are costly to patients and their support groups. The pain, suffering, and loss of livelihood are challenging for anyone, even more for elderly patients. The cost to healthcare budgets can compare and even exceed the costs for care related to such diseases as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and heart disease. • Current osteoporosis statistics show that around 50 percent of women and 25 percent of men over the age of 50 suffer a fragility fracture. About 20 percent of people who suffer a hip fracture will die within their first year following the injury. Even more troublesome for survivors of hip fractures is the chance that 33 percent of senior patients may suffer permanent disability and loss of function to live independently.
The IOF has made it their mission to raise awareness and support for the cause of osteoporosis and patients everywhere. This is intended to promote a change to the current medical practice of treating fractures as a single symptom of osteoporosis instead of treating it as a deeper condition. In cooperation with other health organizations around the world to help promote programs that not only raises awareness of osteoporosis and fractures for people of all ages but also seeks to support new research and methods into treating it.
