What Do CHEMISTS Study? • Traditionally, the study of CHEMISTRY is divided into FIVE BRANCHES. • Sometimes branches OVERLAP each other. • ORGANIC CHEMISTRY – the field of chemistry dedicated to studying CARBON BASED COMPOUNDS. -Carbon compounds generally come from ONCE LIVING ORGANISMS.
2. INORGANIC CHEMISTRY – the study of substances that DO NOT contain carbon. • 3. ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY – the branch of chemistry that studies COMPOSITION of substances. • (WHAT is in it and HOW MUCH) • 4. BIOCHEMISTRY – the field of chemistry that studies CHEMICAL PROCESSES in LIVING ORGANISMS. • 5. PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY – the study of the MECHANISMS (ways) in which CHEMICAL REACTIONS occur and the CHANGES THAT MATERIALS undergo as a result.
Working with a partner….. • Read each of the following descriptions and determine which branch of chemistry would be involved: • 1. A lab determines the mineral • composition of a moon rock. • ANALYTICAL(What and How Much)
2. A student graduate students studies the process of photosynthesis in a botany (plant) lab. -BIOCHEMISTRY (Chemical processes in living organisms)
3. A research lab isolates a new compound from crude oil. • ORGANIC (Carbon-based compounds) • 4.Researchers study how a series of different enzymes affect the rate of the decomposition of bee venom. • PHYICAL - study of how reactions occur.
QUICK REVIEW • What was today’s LEARNING GOAL? • I CAN give aworking definition of CHEMISTY and provide reasons for studying it. • Why do we study CHEMISTRY? • to understand and explain the natural world. • to become an informed and responsible citizen. • to prepare for a career.
