Kady Combs During the last time I went over to the horse farm, Susan and I talked about what the horses eat. Each horse has its own diet plan, so they each get different things to eat. . . . After we talked about this matter of feeding, Susan had me groom . . . the oldest horse there, Star. . . Star was very muddy that morning because it had been raining a lot that week. First I had to take this special type of brush that you use to get the dirt off from the horse, then I had to use another regular horse brush to take the rest of the dirt off and to just brush Star, including her mane and tail. Star has a long tail, and it was very hard to brush because of how muddy and long it was. Susan then decided it was time to cut Star's tail a little bit. After Star was brushed Susan put a horse blanket on her because . . . all the old horses get a blanket. Unicorn Stables
Meghan Draper Over the course of the past few weeks, I became inspired to start a new project. My music has developed from my time in my first semester CBL project, and I will continue to work on this, outside of school. My goals remain to write an album of songs and perform but I have discovered a new passion in myself. This passion is for podcasting. I think the concept is interesting and I think of the types of media I interact with, I find podcasting to be extremely engaging and comical. I am a frequent viewer/listener of the Jenna Julien Podcast. Their podcast tends to be more of the comical variety, and can be vulgar at times, but I always find a deeper concept in them. Inquiry: Lyrics, Music Composition, & Podcasts
Bethanie Hayes Note: Bethanie had hoped to connect with local Kindergarten teachers, but has as yet only had opportunities to work with children in local businesses, including Giggles & Grins, Pleasant Beginnings, and a third daycare near the school. At Giggles and Grins we read books. The children just grab books and say, “Read this. Read this. Read this” -- book after book after book. That’s what we do. . . . I could get crafts ready, but we couldn’t do them every day. Inquiry: Kindergartens
Evan Oliver Hull’s Automotive I had fun with the recording session. Yesterday at CBL Anthony and I worked on taking four bushings out of two rollers off the skidder. It took us an hour and a half but we got them so the jobs done. They are very good to me over there and I hope to continue to work with them. . . . Last Friday I went to the International Festival in Essex at the Expo. It was interesting to see the different cultures all in one area; it felt as if I were standing on the boarder, where these cultures would all come together.
Aaron Sweet Inquiry: Farming & Sugaring It’s December 3rd, 2015, at Enosburg Falls High School. I’m going to read This Is A Poem That Heals Fish by Jean-Pierre Simeon and illustrated by Olivier Tallec. “Mommy, my fish is going to die. Come quickly. Leon is going to die of boredom. Arthur’s mommy looks at him. She closes her eyes. She opens her eyes. . . . A poem? But what is a poem? Arthur goes to look in the kitchen. -- Is there a poem in there? -- ‘Nooo po-eeeem,’ the noodles sigh in reply.”
Hailey Burrington Learning proficiencies? My mom hasn’t worked much with computers. So, from the very beginning at Classic Consignments I learned a lot about the technology she uses for running the shop. She uses a program like Consign Pro. It took us a while to set that up. I had to learn how to set that up, because the former owner didn’t use that. It was something new to us, so we had to learn to use that. This program was not for accounting; it was for tagging, organizing, and putting clothes into the system in the shop. Every day my mom counted up the money; I learned how to do that. I was the second eyes. She’d say, “Count this. Make sure there is blah blah blah [$$$] there.” . . . As new owners we worked to create a warm and welcoming environment in the shop. Classic Consignments
Stetson Garey I’ve been writing down my learning activities at The 1906 House, but haven’t been good about putting these notes on my Personal Page this semester. Most of it is on the notes app on my iPad. I’ll put them in an e-mail and send them to you. I promise to do that. . . A few times I’d walk up to Bonds with Kolby; and we’d do some cleaning around the shop or mopping up inside, dusting mats, or stocking oil and also wipers, as it got more and more snowy outside. It was pretty simple work, really, but we had something to do all the time. The lifting helped develop strength; and we learned a lot just interacting with customers. Renovations at The 1906 House
Kolby Gerrow I really slacked on writing, honestly. I didn’t do a lot of writing. I was busy working during my whole CBL time that I had and didn’t write much until December, when it was cold out. Before I’d be outside doing a bunch of things getting the place cleaned up at Bonds – the garbage, the dumpster, and all that. Then they brought me inside to learn to do the cash register, stock shelves, and talk with customers along with my mentors Dan, Doug, Bob – and then there was Ivan. Sometimes Stetson came along and helped out, too. My favorite mentor had to be my Uncle Dan; he’s always funny, cheerful. . . . Others could be crude, but also funny being crude, telling jokes that made me really angry, but I’d be laughing inside, too. You learn to laugh at yourself. Bond Auto Parts
Hannah Tiffany Inquiry: Caregivers & Alzheimers For my psychology project I am focusing on how working with Alzheimers patients effects their caregivers, family, and people around them. Going over for CBL helps me, because I am dealing one-on-one with an Alzheimers patient. For my actual project, I am going to bring 1-2 other people over with me for an hour. I have to educate them on Alzheimers and what it is, the stages, how it effects someone, etc. . . . Another part of this project will be putting on a presentation for a few people during an AT period. For my presentation I have to create a slideshow and possibly a poster. I'm going to incorporate the stages of Alzheimers: what actually happens to the brain and how it effects the people around them.
Noah Bartholomew I’m going to record. . . “’I’m sorry, Leon, I have not found a poem. All I know is that ‘A poem is when you have the sky in your mouth. It’s like hot, fresh bread, when you eat it, a little is always left over. A poem is when you hear the heartbeat of a stone, when words beat their wings, a song sung in a cage. A poem is when you turn upside down and suddenly the world is new.” . . . Today Scott wasn't there. So I went up to Mountain View Auto Body with Jake and Ethan. I helped John Johnson put stickers on a new Bates truck, then did some detailing on my jeep along with starting to hook some of my new light bars up. Scott Joyal & Sons
Kody Gregoire Today I moved furniture for John Johnson at Mountain View Auto and Sign Design and also helped take a side off a car. . . . Another time Jake, Ethan, and I put a picture on my truck, and we also got a tent for hunting and brought it back to his house. . . . Yesterday I went over to Lely and talked with Paul Godin to see if I could start working there for CBL. He said yes. My mentor there will be another employee named Jeff. He gave me a tour of the place, then had me run the fork lift and move some pallets outside along side the garage. Godin Mechanical Lely Center of Vermont
Jake Johnson Mountain View Auto Body and Sign Design Kody, Ethan, and I all went to the woods after we put a decal on Kody's truck today. When we went to the woods we picked up my hut from hunting, and we cleaned up the shop, . . . I left on Wednesday, January 13th, at 3:00 in the morning and headed to PPG School in Connecticut with my dad. It was lots of fun. I met the owner of the business; and he treated me to lunch. I learned a lot of new skills and got to try many new products. Now I am certified to paint any car. I'm the youngest person to have ever completed this training there.
Brianne Marshall Brownway/Classic Consignments At Brownway I found out ways to keep the elderly occupied with things to do throughout the day, also to take care of them when they are very sick. They are often very immobile; and I learned how difficult it can be for nurses to move the residents without them feeling uncomfortable and how they communicated about this. It usually takes two or more nurses for this work. I realized how these old persons really need help, especially when residents are suffering from Alzheimers. I eventually switched my internship site because it was very slow at Brownway during the 6th Period CBL, when residents were resting. At Classic Consignments I got to experience what it was like to take care of a clothes shop business. I liked learning there, because at CHCC next year my first choice is medical and my second choice is business. So now I have some business experience underneath my belt and also with medical by going to Brownway.
Christine McKinstry Classic Consignments I worked for a year and a half at Classic Consignments, and I thought CBL would be a good opportunity for me to go in and help my boss Emmy Burrington, because she is really busy all the time and working with her is fun. People bring in four or five racks of clothing in at a time. There is always new stuff to do. . . .The semester went pretty well, practicing skills I already knew because I had been there for awhile, so it was really cool to have someone come in and get to teach them. Like Bri got to learn everything new, and I was the one teaching her. I started off with one system, and then we had to integrate into the new system of organizing clothing; and Bri picked it up really fast; I was impressed with her. This was my first job. I learned about it from my friend Hailey, whose mom has now bought the business.
Ethan McNall Mountain View Auto Body & Sign Design Jake, kody, and I went into the woods and got the blind and all of the other stuff from hunting this season. . . . I have been waiting for snow for a while. So I can go snowmobiling but we haven’t gotten much snow for a while. Whenever we get some snow it just rains and it melts away. I haven’t rode my sled much, but I got it all fixed up and its ready to go. Now i need snow.

Justin Soule In CBL I’ve been working a lot in the Montgomery woods at the foothills of Jay Peak, working on sugaring. I’m actually logging with heavy equipment, too. It’s all my land. We’re going to be adding some taps, hopefully six or seven hundred more. We’ve got 3000 now. I’ll be taking the business over when my Dad’s done with it. We own a farm and a trash company., so I work on equipment with my dad, when that breaks down, too. We weld dumpsters occasionally as well. My mother does the books for the farm, the garbage route, sugaring, whatever. In the past 4 or 5 months, we have been switching over our pipeline and moving our pump in the woods. We’re also cutting down the blow down to get it off the pipes. That way the sap can flow! We have an outdoor woodstove, so the blow down becomes fire wood to heat our house and our barn and our water. It heats everything! We usually burn 24 cords each winter. Inquiry: Maple Sugaring in Montgomery
Alexis Benoit Bed & Biscuit Lately I haven't been going to The Bed and Biscuit. It feels like forever since I have been there, but it's because of vacation, exams, and the weather conditions. There isn't much to do there in the winter because the dogs are mostly inside. I'm not sure what I want to do or if I should continue going there or find somewhere else for 2nd Semester. I will have to think about it. Last time I was in the CBL office I read a book with my friend Caitlyn. It was a good book and I hurt Mr. Skurdall’s ears because I didn't realize how loud he had it turned up. Other than that I have been studying for exams and working at the Animal Doctor, where I get paid, too. It's a lot of fun.
Skyler Blaney-Coons During the fall I’ve been working on the Gervais Farm, doing everything basically, from driving tractors, plumbing, electricity -- all that stuff. I’ve been taught it all by my mentor Clement Gervais. I got hooked up with his brother for sugaring last year and I started up with him again this year. We have been tapping and have started a whole new woods. Yesterday we tapped 2000 taps between the five of us. It was a good day, perfect weather. We got some new drills, precision tappers. They are made by Evan Brannon of the Brannon sugaring family. It’s a kind of weird set up, big old head on them, spring loaded. When you push them into the tree, the drill bit goes in and stays in the same exact spot. It works pretty good. We bought some new four-wheelers for the woods, too! We got tracks on them, which we bought from my Uncle Duane Stetson, who works over in New Hampshire now doing PowerSport. Gervais Farms & Sugar Woods
Caitlyn Callan The Sunny Brook Farm is my farm. I’ve been going there for CBL again this fall to clean our cows – and their poop! I also feed them; and I feed some other cows as well. . . . One of Olivier Tallec’s illustrations in Jean Pierre Simeons This Is A Poem That Heals Fish reminded me of John Boy George, my fish, and there was another drawing that could be Taylor Swift, my other fish. . . . I had fun reading The Jolly Christmas Postman; and I’m going to finish my Beowulf and narrative essays for English over the holiday. Sunny Brook Farm
Liz Firkey I started this year focused on education at the Middle School. I did have fun working with the kids, but felt something was missing. . . Sometimes I just sat in the corner doing homework. Then for three days, when Mrs. Harris was gone to a conference in Ohio, I was helping out the sub, since she wasn’t used to the system yet, and I was. It was so much fun doing this! Even the things that most people would find mundane were amazing. Just shelving books, doing returns, or helping kids renew their books was so much fun. So I transferred over to help Mrs. Harris. She doesn’t need me for all the time every day. It’s the library. She can just let me know when she’s done, and I can go and do other things in the corner until she needs me again. I think that is one of the best things. I don’t feel like I have to be right there like I did before. My original goal was to go to college to become a teacher, but I have realized that probably isn’t a very good option for me. As I have been looking at more things this year I realize that one of the things I want to do is to become a librarian. EFHS Library
Alexa Patsouris I would love to work with orphaned children as Angela does. I was accepted into UVM and I know my courses and the education I receive there will lead me to work with extraordinary young people. I will major in speech and language pathology and I plan to double minor in music education and special education. I really would like to work with children. On Wednesday we used the entire class period to learn a new song for the spring concert: I Will Arise and Make Music by Laura Farnell. Mrs. Sherman also brought up to the seniors in the chorus that our time to choose a song to sing at the concert and graduation is coming up. Today we are working on the new song. Inquiry: Choral Music & Piano
Jenessa Ryea I am continuing to work out my schedule. I am meeting with VSAC this morning to work out different classes. I am thinking about taking the summer English class with Mr. Robtoy. If I do this, I can take the early college class at CCV next year and take an introduction to psychology and introduction to sociology class. This would be a huge advantage to me because these classes are free, and all I would have to pay for is books. I would be getting a year of college done and out of the way. This would take a lot of stress off my shoulders. In Transition

Orion Blackwell Today I worked on one computer while Daryl went out to help someone with their computer. First thing I downloaded was Rogue Killer and the other thing was Hitman Pro. I've used these programs quite often, so it was quite easy. On another recent visit the first thing I did was remove a hardrive from a computer. We did this so we could try to recover some pictures that Daryl accidently deleted. I used a program to try to recover the pictures but the program takes forever to scan things so it would literally take all day for it to scan. I left while it was still in the process of searching for the photos. Cold Hollow Computing
James Cooper Note: James joined CBL fairly recently and has focused most of his time upon building a good relationship with his mentors at B & N Sales and Service. He has enjoyed his learning experiences thus far and will be using his Mid-Term Examination time to begin to get comfortable reading the Front Page and also writing on his Personal Page(s) on the CBL Wiki. James had fun and did well reading Jean-Pierre Simeon’s This Is A Poem That Heals Fish aloud with Courtney T. B & N Sales & Repairs
Shea Sheridan My class is going well. I currently have a B+ and only have three "classes" remaining until the end of its semester. This week we are focusing on The New Deal made by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and how it affected the Native Americans throughout the country. We are going to read a couple documents and then I will need to write about whether or not I think The New Deal was fair and if it helped Native American cultures. Inquiry: Native American History
Courtney Tatro Today I followed Hannah around, and we were on shower duty. All I did was learn how to properly shower people with different problems/disabilities. They also found out someone was quitting today so they were scrambling around trying to fill shifts and find someone new. . . . It was a crazy and very busy vacation with multiple family gatherings, gift swapping and working all combined. My boyfriend and I set off on the 19th to his cousin’s house in Newport, where I got to meet his family . . . Then we headed 5 hours to my mothers house, which is almost in Boston. Here we stayed and did Christmas with her and her family . . . . Over the course of the break I worked almost every day with Christmas and New Years off. I closed on both Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, which were both very busy days and a lot of angry people. Brownway Residences

Violet Arcand & Amethyst Duffy (Arcand) I've been trying to focus more on my well being and health. . . . I'm trying to just become more balanced and positive especially with the way I approach things. I will e-mail my Narrative Essay to you on the day of our Mid-Term Exam. (Duffy)Today I read the Robert Frost poem called “After Apple Picking. My favorite part of the poem was when he was talking about his dreams about apples. I really like eating appls, so it really made me hungry. Today in class we talked about what the rest of the year would look like for me. I am coming into our Midterm-Exam period to work on my .Learning Activity Form and Narrative Essay. In Transition
Cameron Geddes Inquiry: Sugaring CBL has been busy lately. I've been spending time checking deer cameras and walking around in the woods. Each day after CBL I go hunting. I enjoy hunting, It helps relax me. It also gives me an adrenaline rush when I see a deer. Having deer come yards away from you is quite the experience. It's interesting watching deer in their natural habitat and the way they act and not even knowing you’re there watching them. . . . With the sugaring season fast approaching us, the next couple of months will be busy, rom preparing the woods to maintaining the woods, also boiling the sap into the syrup. It was nice having break, I worked and hung out with friends over it.
Lindsey Boylan Robinson Over Christmas vacation I am going to be very busy with watching my nephew most of next week and a few more days over vacation. It's going to be a struggle, but I know that I can do it. I also have to get ready for exams when we come back to school because I am missing one day when we can get back from break so it's really important that I get my work done and handed in on time, so I don't fall too far behind. I am doing okay now, but I know that exams are going to be difficult. . . . My Christmas was pretty good. I babysat my nephew a lot, but I loved spending a lot time with him. He's getting bigger and bigger everyday and saying more words. It will be hard to leave him when I go off for college, but it will be the best for the both of us. .. . . I haven't left my nephew's side sense the day he came into my mom’s care. I know that everybody in my family is proud of me. Inquiry: Child Abuse
Mahlik Franklin Physical Education at EFHS For my CBL project this year I am helping out my gym teacher Mr. Gagne. I’m doing this because I would like learn more about what the life of a physical education teacher is. Also, I wanted to do something I enjoy, and I like sports, so it’s worked out really well. . . . In December I read the book by Jean Pierre Simeon called This Is A Poem That Heals Fish, page by page. “Agitated, Arthur goes back to look at his beloved fish. Leon sleeps soundly, beneath a large stone, half-hidden by the seaweed.” This was my favorite illustration in the book, though I didn’t really like the book. It’s different, very different!
Ryan Harrness You haven't moved my stuff yet. I have been working at the barn doing heifer chores with my dad. I did my recording the other day. I think it went well. We have one part left to do in the sugar woods. . . . It is okay. I have read The Front Page and have read the poem by W. S. Merwin called “To The New Year.” The poem has really good imagery when you read it slowly. During CBL I have been working at the barn getting a head start on my chores at the barn everyday. It makes my night chores so much easier because I get ahead by a lot! We have got our sugar woods all maintained and got it ready for tapping. Scenic View Farm & Sugar Woods
Will Houghton . Hannaford Market Hey Hannaford has been really good. I've been in the back back room stocking milk and I've been out in the aisles, too. I've helped a lot of people find stuff and other aisles that they didn't know where things are located. I talk to a lot of the staff and some of them are really nice, and others are really quiet. I will do the recording session during our Mid-Term Exam period.
Kaitlyn Murray . Inquiry: Education at EFMHS This past month has been super challenging in school as well as out of school. Being a junior that is preparing for early college next year is a difficult task . . .. The past several times going over to the middle school have been very slow. . . . One day, I sat with a student named Ava and helped her and her partner McKenna work on a slideshow for their social studies class about a native tribe. The next day going over, I helped Ava with her Ten Marks and VMath. . . . I also helped a girl named Alyssa with her science project. The sixth graders had a project about the layers of the earth . . . and she needed help finding out information. The last day before break . . . most of the sixth graders didn't have any work to do. However, Alyssa did have a little more of her VMath to do so I helped her to complete that. Afterwards, she and Ava wanted to create paper snowflakes for their parents as presents and decorations, so we used the rest of the study hall time to help them create the projects.
Dillon Powers I have been working with Mr Erickson for a while now. I have learned many new things both about teaching and about chemistry. I have helped him make catalysts and labs. I will let you know the next time there is a lab so you can photograph it. I have been helping kids in CP chem, and periodically going up during fourth period to help him with his chem class. I have been exploring some resources on the front page and will write soon about what I read. EFHS Chemistry
