People • Avian influenza mostly occurs in aquatic birds. • The majority of people who have been infected with avian influenza have had direct or close contact with an infected bird. • Avian influenza has the possibility to switch and get the ability to spread between people. • A doctor can detect Avian Influenza by taking a swab of the infected persons nose or throat and then grow that virus so they can see exactly which virus that person has.
Related Flu • Another disease similar to avian flu is swine flu. • Swine flu is a type of flu that affects pigs, or a type of human flu that is caused by a related virus. • When a person is infected with the swine flu it is called a “variant virus”. • This disease only occurs to people who have been exposed to a sick pigs. • This disease cannot be spread from person to person, and cannot be obtained by eating any pork type food.
Cure • People with avian influenza are usually recommended to take oseltamivir, and they may also be recommended to take zanamivir. • People with swine flu are recommended to take amantadine, and rimantadine.
Prevent • The best way to prevent getting avian influenza or swine influenza viruses is to avoid being exposed to any sick or dead animals. • Most people with avian or swine influenza’s have encountered direct or close contact with infected animals. • Influenza vaccination will not prevent infection with avian or swine influenza viruses, but can reduce the risk of co-infection with people and avian or swine influenza viruses.
