The Compound Sentence A REVIEW • When two simple sentences have fallen in love, they can spend all of their time together. It is my favorite color I like blue the most. , so SS SS I like blue the most , so it is my favorite color.
The Semi-colon • The Semi-Colon is the other type of connection for two simple sentences to become one compound sentence. • The Semi-Colon has the same function as a comma and conjunction – it separates two simple sentences. • The relationship between the simple sentences is important (we’ll look at this later). , C ; =
The Semi-Colon • Semi-colon looks exactly like what it does. . • The period ends a sentence. ; • The semi-colon ends and connects. , • The comma connects.
The Semi-Colon • The semi-colon is surprisingly easy once you see what it does. SS SS ; THIS IS SENTENCE PATTERN 4 • It is my favorite color. • I like blue the most. • I like blue the most; it is my favorite color.
Some more examples ; The ice cream truck man drove by my house today . He had big hairy knuckles. My aunt also had hairy knuckles; she loved to wash and comb them. WARNING! Don’t use a conjunction with a semi-colon. My aunt’s knuckle hair is magnificent, but I have no desire to touch it.
When should I use a semi-Colon? • Use a semi-colon when the two simple sentences have a relationship (like that connection we talked about with commas and conjunctions). • I fought the bear and won. I also never kiss plague rats on the mouth. I gnaw on old car tires; it strengthens my jaw for bear combat. • The fact that you defeated the bear has no connection to plague rats, so a period is necessary. • The relationship between gnawing on tires and combatting bears is strengthened by using a semi-colon.
