What is the Church’s Task? Preach the good news in word and deed • God gave Moses numerous commands instructing Israel to care for the poor. Ex 23:10-12, Lev 19:9-10; Deut 15:1-4, • Jesus modeled “the good news” among the hurting, the weak, & the poor. Lk 4:18-21, Mt 4:23-24, Acts 10:36-38 Why was Israel sent into captivity? Isa 1:10-13, 16-17; 58:1-3,5-10
MissionObjectives • “To recover our true identity as human beings created in the image of God, and… • to discover our true vocation as productivestewards, faithfully caring for the world and all the people in it.” Walking with the Poor, p 3.
Discuss: When poor people look at our church, in what ways do they see the embodi-ment of Christ and the healing of His kingdom? • When people look at you, in what ways do they see the face of Jesus and the spirit of the Lord at work? Then what might we / I be doing?
Critical first step Discern whether the situation calls for relief, rehabilitation or development. Relief 1 3 Failure to distinguish among these situations can easily allow alleviation efforts to do harm. Development 2 Relief Rehab
Relief The urgent provision of emergency aid to reduce suffering resulting from a natural and/or man-made crisis. Relief is by its very nature, immediate and temporary. It is prolonged only when self-reliance is impossible. The basic dynamic is provider & receiver.
Rehabilitation The restoration of people and their communities to their pre-crisis state and minimization of future vulnerabilities. Opportunities for moving from doing for to doing with.Local people involved in work. Serves as a bridge between Relief and Development.
Development The process of on-going change that is moving people closerto being in right relationship with God, with themselves, with others and with nature. Development isn’t doneto people orfor people but with people. Key dynamic: is promoting an empowering process. This will typically be done around or result in some “products/project”.

Asset-Based Approach A P2P planning meetings was held in Jamaica in August 2010; this was prep for the P2P programs in Jamaica, 2011 • Individuals & communities have resources to con- tribute, even drive, positive change in their lives. • Social capital • Knowledge • Economic • Key action is to: • Identify resources • Mobilize them • Connect people to resources & action plan
Human Poverty (Sin) Alleviation • Lev 19:9-10 – let the poor glean in the field; to work is to experience a privilege of life and gift from God • Lev 19:15 – be impartial to both rich and the poor; treat all people as needing God’s grace • Lk 4:18-19 – preach good news to the poor [all people at all levels in all places], proclaim release to the captives [of sin], set at liberty those who are oppressed [by own sins] Cited two of these earlier, but building a different case now

Jesus’ poverty is our richness 2Cor 8 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor… …so that you by his poverty might become rich.
