  1. Monday, March 31, 2014 POTD Ms. Tyler bought 4 types of crayons. She bought 30 of each kind. She also purchased some markers, but bought 5 times as many markers as crayons. How many markers did Ms. Tyler buy?

  2. POTD Answer Ms. Tyler bought 4 types of crayons. She bought 30 of each kind. She also purchased some markers, but bought 5 times as many markers as crayons (this means the amount of markers is greater!!). How many markers did Ms. Tyler buy? 4 types of crayons x 30 each = 120 total crayons Crayons x 5 = markers so, 120 total crayons x 5 = 600 markers

  3. Multiplication as Comparisons • Define the following terms • Factor • Product • Multiplicative Comparison is a situation in which one quantity is multiplied by a specified number to get another quantity. • compares two quantities by showing that one quantity is a specified number of times larger or smaller than the other • It helps to remember that the equal sign really means "is the same as." • EX: 4 groups of 7 • 4 x 7 is the same as 28. • 28 is the same as 4 x 7. • 28 is the same as 4 sets of 7. • 28 is 4 times as many as 7.

  4. Let’s Practice  • 64 is eight times as many as... • 42 is six times as many as... • 35 is five times as many as... • 99 is nine times as many as... • 8 x 9 = 72 72 = 8 x 9 72 is 8 times as many as 9 72 is 9 times as many as 8 • 3 x 6 = 18 2 x 5 = 10 6 x 4 = 24 3 x 7 = 21 • 4 x 5 = 20 6 x 7 = 42 7 x 8 = 56 9 x 4 = 36

  7. POTD Answer Mrs. Talton is having a party. She needs 100 ounces of chocolate for her fondue machine. At the store, she can only buy 8 ounce and 12-ounce packages. What is the least amount Mrs. Talton can buy and still have enough for her party? 7 packs of 12-ounces= 84 ounces 2 packs of 8-ounces = 16 ounces Total of 9 packs and 100 ounces… best answer 8 packs of 12-ounce = 96 ounces 1 pack of 8-ounce= 8 ounces Total of 9 packs but, 104 ounces…still 9 packs, but contains more ounces….

  10. Let’s PracticeUse the bar method and write an equation • Sydnieis twelve years old. Her teacher is eight times older. How old is Sydnie’s teacher? • Kumorahhas 16 times as many pencils as Alona. If Kumorahhas 48 pencils, how many does Alonahave?

  11. There are 9 white flowers. There are 3 times as many red flowers as white flowers. How many red flowers are there? Product Unknown Two quantities are compared. One is a multiple of the other. We know the smaller quantity (factor) and the multiplier. To find the bigger quantity (product) we ________________.

  12. There are 27 red flowers. There are 3 times as many red flowers as white flowers. How many white flowers are there? Factor Unknown Two quantities are compared. One is a multiple of the other. We know the bigger quantity (product) and the multiplier. To find the smaller quantity (factor) we _________________.

  13. There are 27 red flowers and 9 white flowers. How many times as many red flowers as white flowers are there? Multiplier Unknown Two quantities are compared. One is a multiple of the other. We know both the bigger quantity (product) and the smaller quantity (factor). To find the multiplier we ____________________.

  14. Steps for problem solving • Understand the problem situation. • Represent the situation with a model. • Write an expression and solve. • Write the answer and look back (check)

  15. Guided • a. Helen raised $12 for the food bank last year and she raised 6 times as much money this year. How much money did she raise this year? • b. Sandra raised $15 for the PTA and Nita raised $45. How many times as much money did Nita raise as compared to Sandra? • c. 18. Wednesday, April 2, 2014 POTD JABIZ town can hold 300 students at a time. The table below shows the attendance for the last 5 days. If JABIZ town had been at max capacity, how many more people would have attended in the 5-day period?

  19. POTD Answer JABIZ town can hold 300 students at a time. The table below shows the attendance for the last 5 days. If JABIZ town had been at max capacity, how many more people would have attended in the 5-day period? 1st way. 5 days x 300 max= 1500 total people. 1500 max - 989 actual = 511 more people 2nd way Find the difference each day from 300 max and add the differences together. 87+157+202+21+44= 511 more people

  20. Homework Review Multiplicative Comparison Problems Write equation and use the bar model to solve. 1. Aaliyah can do 6 push-ups in one minute. Jeremiah said he can do nine times that amount. How many push-ups can Jeremiah do? 2. Saada has collected seven times the amount of snow globes as Tia. If Saada has collected 42 snow globes, how many has Tia collected? 3. Aisha’s plant is 24 inches tall and Charlitta’s plant is 6 inches tall. How many times taller is Aisha’s plant than Charlitta’s? 4. Sharhonda can eat 4 times as many crabs as Morris. If Morris can eat eight crabs, how many crabs can Sharhonda eat?

  21. Guided Practice Write three problems using this information Use a bar model to solve each problem in the set: • Product unknown • Factor unknown • Multiplier unknown 1. Connie ran 50 meters Melissa ran 200 meters • The total number of vehicles counted was156. There were 3 times as many passenger cars as trucks.

  22. Independent Identify what part of the equation is unknown. Write an equation and use the bar model to solve.
