  5. Sonnet 127 In the old age black was not counted fair,Or if it were, it bore not beauty's name; But now is black beauty's successive heir,And beauty slandered with a bastard shame:For since each hand hath put on Nature's power, Fairing the foul with Art's false borrowed face,Sweet beauty hath no name, no holy bower,But is profaned, if not lives in disgrace. Therefore my mistress' eyes are raven black,Her eyes so suited, and they mourners seemAt such who, not born fair, no beauty lack,Sland'ring creation with a false esteem:Yet so they mourn becoming of their woe,That every tongue says beauty should look so.

  6. Sonnet 1 From fairest creatures we desire increase,That thereby beauty's rose might never die,But as the riper should by time decease,His tender heir might bear his memory:But thou contracted to thine own bright eyes,Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel,Making a famine where abundance lies,Thy self thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel:Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament,And only herald to the gaudy spring,Within thine own bud buriest thy content,And, tender churl, mak'st waste in niggarding:Pity the world, or else this glutton be,To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.
