Research Project:CHIETA Success stories CHIETA Research Unit profiled learners in the KZN Area Bafana Mahlangu - ARPL • Bafana grew up in a rural area of Richards Bay and was raised by his "gogo". • Worked as a Workshop Assistant for 15 years – gained skills and experience in Boilermaking and Welding. • One day he heard about the opportunity advertised by CHIETA, for people who would like to be RPL’ed to become an artisan. • This was a big opportunity for him because one can only start a business if you are a qualified artisan. He applied for it and got it. He spent 1 month at the Richards Bay Technical Training Centre doing a refresher course on Boilermaking, and then passed the trade test first time. • He immediately started a business. It has been just over a year and he has a few clients already. When he is busy he is able to employ 4 people. • He is very grateful for the RPL opportunity, as it enabled him to start a business.
