What is DSRC? • Dedicated Short Range Communications • Message Exchanges between Moving Vehicles and “beacons” at the roadside • Vehicles moving up to highway speeds • High Quality of Service – 99.995% delivery • 10 to 150 feet range (today) • Vehicle positioning is a by-product of the communication • Today, most NA DSRC systems operate in the non-multilaterated LMS allocation: 909.75MHz through 921.75MHz. A few backscatter systems operate at other frequencies in the 902-928 MHz band. • There is a major US initiative to create standards and regulatory framework for DSRC at 5.9GHz TSACC / CCCNT
E-ZPasstm Deployment on Peace Bridge, Courtesy: Veridian Why DSRC? • DSRC is an enabling technology for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). • ITS Technology can provide a solution to increase vehicle throughput without increasing roadway capacity as much as would otherwise be necessary. Who & When? • ASTM is creating a standard for DSRC to operate and has defined the Physical and Media Access layers of the standard. • The rest of the standard is still evolving and may be substantially complete within 6 months. • OEM Automotive industry is on board and supporting the standard development TSACC / CCCNT
