  3. Acts 8:36-38 Urgent Question, Urgent Answer 36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

  5. WHEN AM I READY TO BE BAPTIZED? Introduction: 2. Matt. 3:7-8, 12 Seek baptism, not ready

  6. Matt. 3:7-8, 12 Seek Baptism, Not Ready 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: -------- 12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

  7. WHEN AM I READY TO BE BAPTIZED? Introduction: 3. 2 Pet. 1:9 Ready, baptized, but forgot meaning 2 Pet. 1:9 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

  8. 4. Ready: Know sin Hunger for God Know God’s love Know basis of pardon Conditions of pardon Make commitment Begin a new life WHEN AM I READY TO BE BAPTIZED? 5. Not Ready: Please relative Unite family Convenient, social Others are baptized Do “something good” Old enough Over persuasion

  9. WHEN AM I READY TO BE BAPTIZED? Introduction: 6. Preparing the mind & heart for baptism: • The seriousness of sin • The basis of salvation • The conditions of pardon • Make a commitment • Live for him who died for you

  10. WHEN AM I READY TO BE BAPTIZED? I. Seriousness of Sin A. Rom. 7:9 I Died When I Sinned 9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

  11. WHEN AM I READY TO BE BAPTIZED? I. Seriousness of Sin A. Rom. 7:9 I Died When I Sinned • Rom. 7:5-25 Gospel of Christ Superior to Law of Moses • Law of Moses convict of sin, but no perfect sacrifice • Gospel of Christ convict of sin, and provide perfect sacrifice

  12. Rom. 7:5-6 Delivered from Law of Moses & Bondage to Sin 5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. 6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

  13. Rom. 7:7-11 Law of Moses Convict of Sin 7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. 8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. 9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. 10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.

  14. Rom. 7:12-13 Law of Moses Good, Shows Sinfulness of Sin 12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

  15. Rom. 7:14-16 See Law of Moses Good, But Practice Sin 14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

  16. Rom. 7:17-21 Struggle Between Conscience & Sinful Desire 17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present withme; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

  17. Rom. 7:22-23 Result of Struggle: Bondage to Sin 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

  18. Romans 7:24-25 Cry of Defeat in Sin, Cry of Victory in Christ! 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

  19. Three States in Rom. 7:5-25 Before Sin (Vv. 8-9) NO SIN Life SAFE In the Flesh (Vv. 5, 11-24) SINNED Dead LOST Deceived (11) Carnal (14) Enslaved (23) Wretched (24) Delivered from the Flesh (Vv. 24-25) SIN FORGIVEN New Life SAVED

  24. WHEN AM I READY TO BE BAPTIZED? II. Understand the Basis of Salvation C. Rom. 3:23-26 Why Christ Had to Die

  25. Rom. 3:23-26 Why Christ Had to Die 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

  26. GOD IS JUST: Punish Sin GOD IS THE JUSTIFIER: Forgive Sin

  27. WHEN AM I READY TO BE BAPTIZED? II. Understand the Basis of Salvation D. Acts 2:29-36 Christ Raised, Ascended, & Now Rules in His Kingdom

  28. Acts 2:29-32 Risen Christ Rules 29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. 30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. 32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

  29. Acts 2:33-36 Risen Christ Rules 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. 34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool. 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

  47. Put the Lord First Matt. 10:34-36 34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

  48. Put the Lord First Matt. 10:36-39 37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. 39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
