The Controversy • Pro-Life supporters believe abortion is wrong; the killing of an innocent human being. • Pro-Choice supporters believe abortion should be legal; it should be the woman’s choice.
Opposing Views Pro - Choice • The mother’s mental or physical health is in danger • The baby is going to be severely disabled • The mother was a rape or incest victim • Financial problems, where a baby can't be sustained • The mother has an STD and gives it to the baby • Woman’s choice on what goes on in her body
Opposing Views Pro - Life • Abortion takes an innocent life. • Life is only taken legally through self-defense, execution, or war. • Abortion is unsafe. • A fetus can feel pain in the second trimester. • Emotional scars • Adoption or foster care
History of Abortion • Connecticut (1821) - First to ban • (1860) - Twenty states make illegal • Roe vs. Wade (1973) - legalize abortion by 14th Amendment • 1976 - Hyde Amendment: No fundings
History of Abortion • 1977 - A revised Hyde Amendment • Bellotti vs. Bared (1979) - Teens do not need parental consent • F.A.C.E (1994) - Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act • Partial Birth Abortion (2003) - Ban late-term abortions - 19 states

Pro-Life Goal • Ban abortion • Raise awareness about other options: • Raising the child • Adoption
Pro-Choice Goal • Build more abortion clinics • Make abortions more accessible and affordable • Create “after abortion” counseling service
Iowa Abortion Laws • Parents of a minor must be notified • Public funding only in effect for life endangerment, rape, or incest • Partial-birth and last-term pregnancies banned • Abortionists must be a physician or osteopath licensed to practice medicine and surgery • Refusal to perform abortion • Murder of a fetus that is aborted alive • Abortion reported to Iowa DoH • Nonconsensual abortion • Safe Haven Act
Iowa Abortion Statistics • Statistics • 2008 - 12% of Iowan pregnancies resulted in abortion • Highest abortion numbers: Polk County, Johnson County, and Linn County • Two-thirds of teen abortions occur between 18-19 years
Other Information • One study found that 86% of abortions are done for the sake of convenience. • 1 in 3 U.S. women have an abortion by the age of 45. • There are over a million abortions in the U.S. each year. • There have been more than 53 million abortions performed in the States since Roe v. Wade was decided back in 1973.
Other Information • Pro-life protesters can be considered potential terrorists • A ‘safe’ abortion usually occurs within the 1st trimester or early in the 2nd trimester • Some abortion clinics have been caught selling aborted baby parts • Only 13 out of 50 states do not require any parental consent when getting an abortion.
