How Do We Know How To Dance? Understanding The Function Of The Parietal Lobe We’ve worked hard to learn about the human brain. What we’ve discovered has led to groundbreaking research and technological leaps in the fields of medicine and biology. But there’s still so much more to be discovered. Let us reveal a tiny part of the mystery and talk about how the healthy function of parietal lobe affects our bodies and minds. We’ll also cover the risks of parietal lobe damage and why the parietal lobe is so important to our personal well being. What Is The Main Function Of The Parietal Lobe?
We need to understand how our minds work so we can work our minds better. —Jim Kwik, Author of Mindvalley’s Superbrain Program No one has a complete understanding of how the brain works. It remains one of the biggest mysteries to humankind. But we do know something. The brain is a complex structure with many active processes happening at the same time. It receives and processes signals from the environment. We can see around us because the brain allows us to see the world as it is. We can hear, touch, and smell because the brain accepts and interprets the information for us. A part of the brain that we call the cerebral cortex helps us process and deliver all that information. It consists of the four lobes of the brain: temporal, parietal, occipital and frontal lobes. Each lobe processes certain types of signals which come from various parts of the body. Today, we’re going to focus on the parietal lobe.
What Does The Right Parietal Lobe Do? The main function of the parietal lobe is to successfully interpret sensory information. This includes our sense of speech, sight, and touch. Apart from this, it also allows us to move, have a sense of orientationin our environment, and understand basic tasks like reading, writing, and mathematics. What Does Parietal Lobe Damage Look Like? When it comes to the parietal lobe damage, the consequences are different and depend on where the injury occurred. Injury to the left parietal lobe may result in apraxia, which is a disorder that makes it difficult for an individual to perform basic movement actions.
Injury to the right parietal lobe could result in amorphosynthesis, a condition in which a person has perception on only one side of the body. Damage to either side of the parietal lobe often has noticeable symptoms but in many cases, the symptoms are temporary and treatable. There’s also the possibility that damage can occur to both sides of the parietal lobe simultaneously. This sometimes results in Balint’s Syndrome, a condition that makes it difficult for a person to see and interact with their environment. What Does The Parietal Region Of The Brain Do? As you can see, the parietal region of the brain is very important. It helps us see and feel the world around us, and to perform basic movements.
You may think that your senses operate automatically. But its only with the healthy function of parietal lobe that we can understand and interact with our environment. But the parietal lobe doesn’t operate on its own. In fact, each lobe of the brain has an important role to play. Each lobe is linked to the other, each is tasked with an important role, and each works together to deliver information from all parts of our body to the brain and back.
