Southern Africa Presentation and Activity by Deanna Spraker. RATIONALE. Students will be exposed to the diversity of Southern Africa.
E N D
RATIONALE • Students will be exposed to the diversity of Southern Africa. • Students will be be exposed to questions that have no definite right or wrong answer so; therefore, they will have to come up with their own answer and then backup their explanation.
OBJECTIVES • Students will be able to locate Africa and South Africa on a map. (es 1c,3a) • Students will be able define Ecology and ecosystem (bio.9) • Students will be able to explain why we have different seasons and why the Northern and Southern hemispheres have opposite seasons. (es. 4c,)
OBJECTIVES CONTINUED • Students will be able to recognize the value of South African mineral resources. (es 5b, 7a) • Students will be able to list the kingdoms that make up the six kingdom classification system. (Bio.7a., bio.5, bio.1a) • Students will be able to explain how and why we classify organisms. (bio.7)
OBJECTIVES CONTINUED • Students will be able to classify animals into their perspective classes Mammalia, Aves, Insecta, Reptilia, etc. (bio.7) • Students will be able to define carnivore, omnivore, and herbivore. (bio. 8b,9)
MATERIALS • Computer • This PowerPoint presentation • Maps (optional) You can use maps to show students different types of data concerning Southern Africa, such as rainfall, climate, ecosystems etc.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION • Make sure that before the activity and presentation that students are aware of the six kingdoms and the classes that make up the Animalia kingdom also students should be aware of characteristics used to classify organisms.
PROCEDURES: GO THROUGH THE FOLLOWING SLIDES AND DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT YOU THINK THAT THE ORGANISMS ARE FOUND IN SOUTH AFRICA AND WHY OR WHY NOT. MAKE A TABLE OF ALL OF THE ORGANISMS AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS. MAKE SURE TO ALSO CLASSIFY EACH ORGANISM INTO THE APPROPRIATE KINGDOM AND CLASS. ANSWER ANY OF THE OTHER QUESTIONS ON THE SLIDES AS YOU GO.
ASSESSMENT • Students will be assessed on their charts questions and how well they back up their explanations.
WHICH CONTINENT IS THIS? WHERE WOULD SOUTH AFRICA BE LOCATED?
DIVERSITY OF LIFE IN SOUTHERN AFRICA
WHAT COUNTRIES MAKE UP SOUTHERN AFRICA? MALAWIMOZAMBIQUE ZAMBIA SWAZILAND ZIMBABWE SOUTH AFRICA NAMIBIA LESOTHO BOTSWANA
CLIMATE • SEASONS ARE OPPOSITE OF THOSE IN EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA. • SUMMER: NOVEMBER-APRIL • WINTER: MAY- AUGUST • SPRING: SEPTMEMBER - OCTOBER • HIGHER RAINFALL IN EASTERN SOUTH AFRICA AND LOWER OR NONEXISTENT IN THE WEST.
EARTH SCIENCE REVIEW • WHY ARE THE SEASONS OPPOSITE? • CLICK ON THE LINK AT THE BOTTOM TO SEE THE ANSWER.
ANSWER • Due to the earth’s revolution around the sun and its tilt the two hemispheres receive differing amounts of sunlight throughout the year. • During the winter months in the Northern hemisphere we have less direct sunlight due to the tilt of the earth and our point in our revolution. Seasons have nothing to do with the distance from the sun.
SOUTH AFRICA RESOURCES • DIAMONDS: • GOLD: • VERMICULITE: • CHROMIUM: • TITANIUM: • MAGANESE: • PLATINUM: GOLD COPPER
WHAT IS ECOLOGY? • STUDY OF HOW BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC FACTORS INTERACT WITH ONE ANOTHER.
ECOSYSTEMS OF SOUTH AFRICA. • WETLANDS, ESTUARIES, MARSHLANDS, GRASSLANDS, LAKES AND FOREST, • SAVANNAS AND KAROO • DESERTS • RIVERS, LAKES, OCEAN • DELTAS • NOW TRY TO DETERMINE WHAT AN ECOSYSTEM IS, BASED ON TH EXAMPLES.
DOES SOUTH AFRICA HAVE THE SAME ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS AS WE DO IN THE UNITED STATES? DO PEOPLE IN SOUTH AFRICA PRACTICE CONSERVATION?
IF YOU ARE CAUGHT TRYING TO KILL AN ELEPHANT FOR THE IVORY YOU WOULD BE HUNTED DOWN AND PROSECUTED. NOW DO YOU THINK THEY ARE CONCERNED ABOUT CONSERVATION? ALL COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD HAVE PLENTY THAT THEY CAN DO TO HELP WITH CONSERVATION AND ALL HAVE MANY OF THE SAME CONCERNS.
WHAT ARE THE SIX KINGDOMS? • ANIMALIA • PLANTAE • PROTISTA • FUNGI • ARCHEA • MONERA
HOW DO WE CLASSIFY ORGANISMS? WHY DO WE CLASSIFY ORGANISMS?
KINGDOM ANIMALIA • LIST SOME OF THE CLASSES THAT YOU WOULD FIND IN THE KINGDOM ANIMALIA. NOW TRY TO LIST ANIMALS THAT YOU WOULD FIND IN SOUTH AFRICA.
AMONG THE MOST DANGEROUS ANIMALS GRAZE IN HERDS ON WOODLAND SAVANNAS. BUFFALO
CAN WEIGH UP TO 5 TONS LARGEST LAND ANIMAL IN THE WORLD
ENDANGERED BLACK RHINOS CAN REACH 1.6 M TALL & CAN WEIGH 1 TON
LEOPARD LEOPARD OFTEN NOCTURNAL SHY ABLETO LIVE IN MANY HABITATS
ONLY TYPE OF ANTELOPE WITH BLACK HAIR ABOVE THE REAR HOOF. IMPALA
WILDEBEESTS STAMP, BUCK, AND RUN IN CIRCLES WHICH IS CAUSED BY INSECT LARVAE THAT ATTACK THEIR NASAL PASSAGES AND SOMETIMES THEIR BRAINS.
BABOON OMNIVORES AGGRESSIVE
DID GIRAFFES ALWAYS HAVE SUCH LONG NECKS? TALLEST ANIMAL IN THE WORLD ONLY HAVE 7 VERTEBRAE IN THEIR NECK.
LIVE IN MOST HABITATS EXCEPT FOR DENSE FORESTS
SPOTTTED HYENA FAMOUS LAUGH
VERVET MONKEY 70 CM TAIL
WHAT ABOUT WOLVES, DO THEY RESIDE IN SOUTH AFRICA?
HEY BUDDY, WHAT DO YOU THINK, WOULD I LIVE IN SOUTH AFRICA? AM I A CARNIVORE? WHATIS A CARNIVORE?
WHOOOOO THINKS THAT WE WOULD LIVE IN SOUTH AFRICA? HEY WANNA GO FIND A FEW NICE JUICY MICE FOR SUPPER?
What animals did you think were found in Southern Africa? • You should have found that all of the organisms in the slide show were found in Africa except for the wolves and the tigers.
I will leave you with some questions to ponder. • What if anything should we do to save endangered species? • For example cheetahs • Will some species become extinct even if we do not intervene? • Realistically can and how do humans precisely keep up with an accurate account of each organism?
IS AFRICA DIVERSE? Without a doubt the answer is yes.
Other Activities • Have students find Southern African countries on a map by using latitude and longitude. (es. Sol 1c,3c,d) • Divide students into groups and give each group a country in South Africa and have them do library research on each country and then do a presentation for the class.
Other Activities continued • Have students go to www.mii.org/ and have students look at the picture of the baby and how many minerals, metals, and fuel each American baby will need. Then have students find out how many of these resources come from Africa. • Have students research the territoriality and predator / prey relationships of fish in Lake Malawi.
