Exploring California • Spanish Explorers In the 1500’s Spanish explorers began claiming land in Mexico and California. • In 1579 Francis Drake claimed land in California for England • In 1700’s Russian fur traders came to California to hunt for fur. Home
Early Communities • The Spanish Build Missions The Spanish built 21 missions in California to spread their religion. • The First Mission The first mission was built in San Diego by Father Serra and Gasper de Portola Indians and Spanish priests lived there. • Presidios Presidios protected the missions from being attack. Soldiers and their families lived there. • Pueblo Pueblos of villages were a type of community. American Indians and people from Spain, Mexico and Africa lived there. Home
Mexican Ranchos • The Indians did most of the work. • The ranchos did goods (cow hides and tallow). • Indian men worked as cow hands and farmed (vaqueros). Indian women cooked and cleaned. • The ranchos were owned by a person or a family (men who owned the rancho=ranchos). • There was also huge cattle ranches. Home
Rancho Santa Anita But Hugo Reid wasn’t a good business man because he spent all the money he made so he had to sell the rancho. Hugo Reid bought a rancho but he had to fix it so he built an adobe house. Lucky Baldwin buys the rancho and sets out to make some money. Then trains became bigger. Lucky Baldwin sensed a deal.
