CSX30HS - Outline • Administriva • Network Basics
CSX30HS - Administrivia • Book Purchase • Syllabus • Adds, Drops • Class pre-requisites • NetWare versions
CSX30HS - Networking Basics • Computer Network Purposes • Computer Network Components • Computer Network Topologies • Network Administrator
Purposes of a Computer Network • International social plan to create jobs for millions of hardworking people • Cost savings • Time savings • Centralized data • Security • Fault tolerance • Communication
Network Components • Hardware • Software
Hardware - server • General Server Info • Similar to workstation except increased memory and file system. • Dedicated vs. nondedicated
Hardware - server • Server : NetWare specific • Pentium or higher • CD-ROM • 64 MB RAM - minimum • the more the better • 550 MB Hard drive minimum • 50 DOS partition • 500 SYS volume
Hardware - client • Computers attached to the network for running user applications. • DOS, Windows 3.1x, Windows 95/98, Windows NT 3.x,4, 2000, Macintosh, UNIX, Linux, OS2. • Clients often have equal or faster processor, and better video than server.
Hardware - Network Board (NIC) • Required in all networked computers • Open System Interconnection (OSI) Layer - Physical • Converts bits to electronic signals and back again. • Different types and speeds.
Hardware - Communications Media • The cable system or cords by which signals pass • Twisted Pair • UTP • STP • Coaxial • Thick Ethernet • Fiber Optic
Topology • The physical geometry used to connect network nodes • Star • Linear Bus • Ring
Topology - Star • Requires the greatest amount of wire • Easy to expand • High fault tolerant • Easy to trouble shoot
Topology – Linear Bus • Requires the least amount of cabling • Difficult to expand unless a connector already exists in the new location • Poor fault tolerance • All computers can be affected by one computer’s problem
Topology – Ring • Requires more wiring than bus • Difficult to expand • All computers affected by one break in the ring • Troubleshooting, not too bad with the proper software
Hardware – UPS • Uninterruptible Power Supply • A battery that protects the server and its data files in the event of power loss • Many can be set up to automatically close all files and shutdown properly when detecting power loss
Hardware – Tape Backup • A digital audio tape • Copy all important server files for ease recovery in case of disaster • Regularity of backups • Store in safe place - usually off site
Hardware – Peripheral Devices • CD-ROM • Plotters • Optical Drives • Printers • Scanners • Tape, Jaz or Zip drives
Hardware – Network Printers • Sharing resources is an important advantage of networks • Path: Workstation -> print que -> print server -> printer • Local printer connected to server • Remote printer connected to workstation • Directly attached network printer
Software Components • NIC Drivers • Protocol Stacks • TCP/IP, SPX/IPX, NetBEUI • Network operating system • Client Software
Types of Network Operating Systems • Peer-to-Peer • LAN-tastic • Windows 3.11 for Workgroups • Windows 95/98 • Client-Server • Windows NT, 2000 • Novell NetWare 3, 4, 5
Selecting a Network OS • Defining Network needs • Network size • Client Workstations • Network use • Centralized Storage • Centralized Applications
NetWare Enhancements • Enhanced security • Improved long filename support • Increased directory entry volume capacity • NetWare Client 32 workstation software • NetWare Application Manager and NAL • Enhanced printer support • Various NOS patches and updates
NetWare Enhancements • Enhanced installation procedures • Major NetWare Administrator enhancements • Support for multiple processor servers • Enhanced backup abilities • NetWare Distributed Print Services (NDPS)
Network Administration Duties • Documentation • Backup • Protection • Management
Administrator Responsibilities • Novell Directory Services (NDS) • NetWare file system • Novell Distributed Print Services (NDPS) • Novell Application Launcher • Security • Storage Management Services
Certification • CNA - Certified Novell Administrator • 1992 • Establish a standard of knowledge and performance • NetWare 5 Exam 050-639 • Testing centers locally • Training centers - classroom, I.S., distance • Classroom courses: 5 days, $2,000.00
