  1. The three partsofyour thesis

  2. Name or allude to the three authors or titles. • State your assertion—should be debatable (i.e., another person could disagree with the statement) • Project your plan—two or three reasons you will use to develop your assertion. Example of a thesis containing all three parts: Bradbury, Arnold, and Gallozzi suggest redemption from past mistakes is possible if people examine their lives honestly and forge relationships that help them change.

  3. Is the assertion debatable? Assertion: Redemption from past mistakes is possible… Can one argue the other side of this assertion? Complete redemption is not possible. • Some guilt always remains. It never disappears completely. (Amir is plagued by guilt for decades--it ruins much of his life.) • Amir lost his chance to redeem himself completely because Hassan died. He’ll never be able to tell him the truth and receive forgiveness. • Just because Sohrab smiles at the end doesn’t mean that he’s going to be ok. He’s deeply disturbed. The book doesn’t tell us whether or not he helps Amir find forgiveness.

  4. How many body paragraphs are planned? Projected Plan: Bradbury, Arnold, and Gallozzi suggest redemption from past mistakes is possible if people examine their lives honestly and forge relationships that help them change. Two body paragraphs are planned: Topic Sentence 1: If people honestly admit their mistakes to themselves and others, they can begin to find forgiveness. Topic Sentence 2: When people develop healthy relationships with others, they can begin to change their behavior and become good again.

  5. Student samples…Is anything missing? • Amir and Hassan’s compassion, sacrifice, and love aren’t truly valued until they were tied together by blood. • William Blake, KhaledHousseini, and “C” all hint that unresolved guilt can lead to destruction. • Housseini, Wiki article, and Weezer suggest that honor and pride boost self-esteem because they lead to benefits such as trustworthiness and righteousness. • A,B,C suggest that salvation is possible but one must repent and repay in good works to silence the screaming voice that is guilt.
