Health KS has one of the highest obesity rates in the nation & more than 20 percent of KS children live in poverty What we are doing… • Improving nutrition through education • Saving more than 6000 Medicare participants an average of $832/person with SHICK (Senior Health Insurance Counseling for KS) • Conducting workshops to help families & practitioners understand care options for elderly Kansans • Sharing unbiased info about the Affordable Care Act
Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders A complex global society of the future will require leaders with effective teamwork & communication skills. What we are doing… • Guiding 72,000 youth in KS 4-H programs • 4-H members are twice as likely to attend college & pursue careers in science, engineering & computer tech. Also 3.4 times more likely to actively contribute to their communities
Community Vitality Communities throughout KS face many challenges with a variety of available resources. What we are doing… • Helping communities of all sizes maintain necessary services, such as grocery stores. • Working with families, ranchers & farmers to develop better financial management practices • Train Extension Master Gardeners & Master Foods Volunteers who provide over 100,000 hours of service
Global Food Systems 1 in 5 Kansans work in jobs related to ag & food production. What we are doing… • Develop new crop varieties suited to KS climate • Reduce food loss caused by insects, poor storage, & processing techniques • ID ways to maintain cattle rangeland • Helping families stretch their food dollars
Water Current irrigation trends could deplete 69 percent of the groundwater in the Ogallala Aquifer within 50 years. What we are doing… • Breeding new drought-tolerant varieties of crops • Developing more efficient irrigation & water monitoring systems for farm & home use • Working with land owners to reduce sedimentation into reservoirs & improve surface water quality • Developing 50-year water policy
