The purpose of spiritual disciplines is to set us apart for Christ, not to set us apart from non-believers.
“If we don’t feel strong desires for the manifestation of the glory of God, it is not because we have drunk deeply and are satisfied. It is because we have nibbled so long at the table of the world. Our soul is stuffed with small things, and there is no room for the great.” John Piper
“More than any other discipline, fasting reveals the things that control us.” Richard Foster
“For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.” Galatians 5:17
Set apart- “to mark off a boundary” “It defines where I start and where I end, what is me and what is not me. It defines areas of responsibility; what I am responsible for and what I am not.” John Townsend
. . .for ME. “What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.” Philippians 3.8
