Properties of Acids • Sour to taste • Corrosive • Electrolytes (conducts electricity) • Forms H+or (H3O+): hydronium ions when attach to water molecule • Conducts electricity • Reacts with metals to free hydrogen (H2) gas
Properties of Bases Bitter to taste Slippery to touch Conducts electricity Reacts with metal ions to form insoluble compounds that comes out of solution Many form OH- (hydroxide ions) in water
Indicators • An organic compound that changes color in acids and bases • Types of indicators
pH Scale • The pH of a solution is a measure of the concentration of H+ ions in it. • The greater the H+ concentration is, the lower the pH is and the more acidic the solution is.
pH Scale Base (8 – 14) Acids (1 – 6) • Soft drinks • Stomach Contents • Vinegar • Tomatoes • Drain Cleaner • Ammonia • Milk of Magnesia • Baking Soda • Egg Whites
Neutralization Reactions • A chemical reaction between an acid and a base that takes place in a water solution • Equation • Acid + Base Salt + Water • Example • HCl (aq) + Ca(OH)2 (aq) CaCl2(aq) + H2O (l)
