  2. 1787-1820 • The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 banned slavery in the new territories north of the Ohio River.

  3. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 • The Missouri Compromise of 1820: • Missouri admitted as a slave state. • Maine admitted as a free state. • Slavery banned in Louisiana Territory.

  4. The Wilmot Proviso • 1846 a bill that banned slavery in any territory acquired from Mexico. • Passed in the House, defeated in the Senate led by John Calhoun who said banning slavery would lead to “political revolution, anarchy, civil war.”

  5. The Compromise of 1850 • California is admitted as a free state. • New Mexico territory was given the option of “popular sovereignty.” • A new, stricter Fugitive Slave Act is passed.

  6. The Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854 • Territory split into Kansas and Nebraska. • Missouri Compromise repealed. • Slavery decided by “popular sovereignty”
