Essential and Guiding Questions: • How does geography affect the population of a country/region? • How does the population of a country/region affect other countries/regions? • How does human activity affect the environment? • How does the physical environment affect the political, social and economic relations of differing cultures? • How do natural resources impact the development of a culture/civilization? • How can a variety of maps be used to gain information? • What factors impact international trade? • How does the physical environment affect the development of political, economic, and social systems? • In what ways do humans try to change the environment to fit their needs?
Day One: Tuesday, August 27, 2013 • Quiet Question: Type One Prompt---Ms. Barben is going to read aloud “Why Geography Matters But So Little Is Learned”. The reading is attached to the lesson plan. • As Ms. Barben reads aloud, you should be using Active Reading strategies---highlighting, making notes, writing down examples or questions in the margins, etc… • Then with your partner, answer the two identified questions on the reading. • Since this is a Type One Prompt, it can be done in bullets and does not have to be written in complete sentences.
Tuesday, August 27, 2013 • Class: Pairs will now share their responses and a class list of answers will be generated. • Class: Ms. Barben is going to begin her Interactive Review Lecture on the Five Themes of Geography and Map Skills. • You are to fill in the information in the provided graphic organizer, draw images and symbols to help you remember, and do the activities within the lecture powerpoint.
Tuesday, August 27, 2013 • Homework:Formative Assessment---Go to Ms. Barben’s Teacher Page and download the article “Why Geography Matters More Than Ever” by Harm De Blij and answer the six questions. • This homework should be typed up. • The questions should be numbered and typed out. • The answers may be done in bullet format but be complete thoughts with examples and explanations. • Due next class period---Wednesday, August 28, 2013!
Day Two: Wednesday, August 28, 2013 • Class: Ms. Barben is going to finish her Interactive Review Lecture on the Five Themes of Geography and Map Skills and you are to finish completing the graphic organizer. • Pairs:Formative Assessment---You will have the rest of the class to begin the 2013 Geography Review Activity using the textbook pages “ National Geographic Reference Atlas and Essential Elements of Geography” to check and correct your answers. • The pages for this are A1 to A27 and GH1 to GH13. • Homework: Finish the 2013 Geography Review Activity for the next class period. We will be working with it to finish the lesson
Day Three: Thursday, August 29, 2013 • Pairs: Formative Assessment---With your partner from the last class period, go through your answers for the Geography Review Activity and make all the corrections. • You will have half of the class period to do this. • Homework: Summative Assessment---You will be creating a Review of Geography Scavenger Hunt. • Night One—Thursday, August 29, 2013: Complete first seven clues. • Night Two---Friday, August 30, 2013: Complete last eight clues. • Night Three---Tuesday, September 3, 2013: Complete maps, answer key, and edit work. Print up final copies. • Due: Wednesday, September 4, 2013!
Thursday, August 29, 2013 • 2013 Review of Geography Homework Grade Sheet Due on: • Student’s Name: Period: • Create a Geography Scavenger Hunt using measures of latitude and longitude to locate specific places on the maps of either Africa or Asia---locating cities and major land features. • 1.__________It was turned in on time. If late, how many days late?_________It cannot be turned in more than FIVE DAYS LATE. • 2.__________The Scavenger Hunt and the Answer Key were typed. The FIFTEEN questions/clues were clear. Worth 50 Points. • The questions/clues were specific and clear. • The questions/clues were based upon specific measures of latitude and longitude. • The questions/clues were also based upon references to nearby countries and/or physical features. • Cities: 5 • Landforms: 5 • Bodies of Water: 5 • You must address all four hemispheres with this assignment. • The clues should be a significant fact about the location with the latitude and longitude that the person has to find. • 3.__________There was a correct answer key for all FIFTEEN cities/land features to be located.
