Teaching Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) in Primary schools today is vital! PDHPE encourages children to develop meaningful understandings and values of themselves and others; promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles – which are, in turn, influenced by informed decisions and responsible actions.
The aim of education is to nurture individuals and equip them with the essential skills needed to become extraordinary members of society. PDHPE achieves this by providing students with opportunities to develop values and attitudes of appreciation and commitment to healthy and socially just ways of living; and skills – including: decision making, communicating and acting upon health choices; problem solving; moving confidently and competently; and forming and maintaining positive relationships.
The content knowledge found in PDHPE teaches essential life skills as it prepares students as healthy members of society. Topic areas that are covered include: active lifestyle, dance, games and sport, growth and development, gymnastics, interpersonal relationships, personal health choices and safe living.
PDHPE’s legacy to students is an offer - to take responsibility for their lifestyle choices and keep healthy in all areas of life – mind, body, safe living, relationships and so forth.
