8. Review Creation: God reveals His goodness through creation and His mercy in response to sin. Patriarchs: God reveals His response to the faithful-ness of men (Job, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph) and His covenant promises to them as they chose to trust in Him. Exodus: God liberates Israel from bondage, then uses Moses to shepherd them in the wilderness while shaping them into a nation holy to Himself through the covenant power of His Law. Conquest: Moses passes his leadership role to Joshua who, by relying on God’s presence and power, leads them to take possession of and settle the Promised Land over a thirty year period.

The Book of Joshua • Written by Joshua during his time (death recorded by Eleazar) • Records the conquests of Canaan/other occupation events: • Renewal of the covenant • Salvation of Rahab • Defeat of Jericho • Failures at Ai and Gibeon • Division of the land among 12 tribes • Begins with God’s promise to be with Joshua and announcement that he had already been given the land • Ends with Joshua’s challenge to the nation to forsake the small gods of Canaan and follow the LORD only • Key verse: Joshua 1:8 - “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.”

23. Conclusions God’s guidance and blessing do not mean that His people will not have battles, for without battles there can be no victory! One person’s sin can affect the entire covenant community Prayerlessness in decision-making can lead to destructive decisions God’s ways can sometimes run contrary to human logic, but God’s ways are always best

25. Discussion What are the consequences in the life of a Christian who deliberately sins? How does deliberate sin affect the community of believers? How can a church avoid God’s judgment for the deliberate sins of one of it’s members? Do churches today take sin seriously? (Why not?) Israel stumbled in making a treaty with Gibeon without first praying. How did God use this mistake to benefit the people, despite their error? What does this tell us about how God views errors we make as believers? How do Christians today make covenants with the world that compromise their witness?
