Agenda/Topics To Be Covered The students will analyze critics of Roosevelt and his New Deal policies by comparing conservative and liberal positions Announcement: Chapter 15 Test Friday February 10 Due: African-American project February 29 Drill: Analyze the political cartoon on page 509 and answer the following 1. What “compass” did Roosevelt want to change, and why? 2. Did everyone in Congress support the actions/ideas of the President? Why?

A New Deal Fights the Depression Ch. 15 Section 1 pgs. 504-510 The New Deal Comes under attack Some liberals said the New Deal did not go far enough Conservatives said he spent to much and tried to move the country towards socialism The Supreme Court Reacts NIRA declared unconstitutional legislative powers to the executive branch AAA declared unconstitutional farming is a local issue governed by the states

Tried to pack the court in 1937 with 6 new justices to vote in favor of his programs Roosevelt received backlash from the public Resignations on the court allowed him to appoint like-minded justices 3 Fiery Critics American Liberty League wealthy business owners Opposed New Deal laws violated respect for the rights of individuals and property Father Charles Coughlin guaranteed annual income nationalization of banks Dr. Francis Townsend FDR not doing enough to help the poor devised a pension plan that was to expensive Senator Heuy Long Share Our Wealth Assassinated in 1935
