Blood Vessels • Arteries carry blood away from the heart • Veins carry blood to the heart • Capillaries form a network between arteries and veins to distribute materials to cells and collect waste.
Arteries • Thick muscular walls • Strong connective tissue • Round diameter • No valves • High pressure
Veins • Some muscle • Some connective tissue, thicker layer than muscle • Thin walls • Irregular diameter • Low pressure • Valves prevent backflow
Capillaries • No muscle layer or connective tissue • Walls one cell thick • Medium to low pressure
