What Students VALUE • Authenticity • Allies that have their interest at heart • Words and actions congruent • Full disclosure of teaching practice • Responsiveness • Be a real person
What ARE STUDENTS LIKE? • They lead complex lives • Our assumptions of their motivations are often wrong • Quotes: • “critical and creative thinking only happen in the lived experience of everyday life, and you have to overcome all kinds of doubt and fear to actually think critically or creatively. ” • “Crafting a self is not something you do on an assembly line, it’s not something that happens quickly. It’s hard work, and it’s different for everybody.”
What ARE OUR STUDENTS LIKE? • Circle of voices • What do you think is most important to students in your classes at Stockton? • Individually take 2 minutes to consider the question • Get into groups of 4-5 • Each person shares their answer in one minute - NO COMMENTING • Spend another 5 minutes in discussion • Rule: vMust refer to what the other person said in their one minute • What resonated? What did you disagree with? • Ask a follow up question
